Has anyone used a bypass oil filtration setup to divert a small amount of oil flow from the engine and filter down to 1 micron and return to the sump?

I have used a Frantz kit in larger Ford/IH diesels with great results. I have safely run 40,000km on an oil change with analysis results showing that the oil was still fine even at that mileage. So the kits pay for themselves and we produce much less waste by changing oil less often.

And.....these old engine we are running ain't made anymore. I like to keep them healthy.

I ran an amsoil on my BJ60 for a while, it's since moved to a friends 60 as his 85 had the filter facing up, and in the way of the turbo we mounted. It's the amsoil dual w/bypass setup and it seems to be working for him. Never tested the oil though just changed at regular intervals, and the bypass every 4 or 6 changes.

Isuzu 4BD1T's have them from the factory. They were running 16,000km oil changes back in 1985.

Many modern filters have a bypass filter built in. You have to either know your filters really well or cut them open to check.

I have a frantz on my 3B and never did analysis, but the oil was always a nice healthy rich black colour. I changed oil yearly/12ks, but did the filters every few months. Ran redline and amsoil synthetic as well as moly and zink additives. I just checked my bearings recently and they were pristine.

Dougal: Are these stock bypass filters from Isuzu the filter mounts that have the dual filters? My 4BD2T has the large single filter.

You can buy large single filters with a bypass incorporated within them too.
Don't ask me for part numbers though.

I run a Harvard bypass filter. Still end up changing the oil at regular intervals though.

Hi Gerg, Where does your return oil line go to? Was there perceptible change in your oil pressure? Thank you!

Thank you for your reply Gerg. With such a small amount of return oil, in hindsight, do you think a return to the oil filler cap would be much different?

No problem. I had an amsoil bypass filter on my Jetta many years ago and that's exactly how I plumed it in. Th volume is really just a trickle. I think putting a T into the Vacume pump oil return would be fine too. Would be easier to hide the hoses.

COOL! A T into the vacuum pump return, now that is what I like the sound of..has anyone here done this? I wonder if it would affect vacuum though...

It's been a while since I cracked open my alternator, but I'm pretty sure the oil just lubricates the alternator, the air vanes are not oiled.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Amsoil bypass kit for 80 Series Diesels ! .. Watched a couple of boobtube vids which indicated that after adding a bypass filter the engine oil was clean .. A restriction orifice only allows a small amount of oil to bypass the system .. The clean oil is then dumped back into the oil filler cap so nice clean oil on the top end ..

That's the actual unit on my cruiser!
No one could possibly weld the bracket as poorly twice.
As per PO
Works well.

I've been running Frantz bypass filters on my cars for years. Currently I have one on my 87 BMW cabrio, and will put another Frantz on my 1HZ swap when I get it completed. Bypass filtering makes a ton of sense - best of both worlds. Really high particulate filtering (with high flow restriction) and an otherwise "normal" filtering with lower restriction setup for 90%+ of oil flow. Eventually all the oil makes it thru the bypass filter. With the Frantz, the filter element in the bypass is a roll of standard toilet paper. Pretty slick setup actually...

Which kit are you planning on your HZ? I’ve got a 12HT but don’t know how this would mount and the
practical use of it

Ok, a guy from Nelson mentioned Amsoil. So I found a kit. It’s got an adapter and remote mount.

This looks like it might just do a good job, and it would allow easier accessibility. A guy spends
a lot of time and money on an engine, kind of want it to last as long as possible.
