I bought a 2001 100 series a couple of months ago and noticed that the heat shield on my driver side cat is missing while I was looking for the famous " heat shield rattle".

The noise is probably from the passenger side heat shield which is barely holding on. I'll probably just buy a hose clamp to hold it in place.

As for the driver side, has anyone had success with the oem heat shield(part no 18436-50040 for $35)?
Do I need to buy anything else with it?
I've read somewhere the entire exhaust has to be removed to get it on. And that some mechanics are charging $700+
Or can I survive not having one at all?

You can replace those shields without removing any of the exhaust. IIRC, you will need to buy the bolts that hold the shields together.
