anyone know anything about the diesels that are in a lot of forward cab box trucks, like the nissans, mitsubishis and isuzus? they are definately common vehicles, so i was thinking one of those motors would be a good candidate for a diesel swap? any idea on size? how about compatibillity with toyota or domestic tranny's? i looked around a bit online and didn't find much....

There is an Isuzu thread on here somewhere.
The problem with most of these types of engines is that the 6 cyls are usually too long by about 6 inches and the 4cyl are quite tall.
Some of them are very noisy without the bulk of a full size truck around them.

None of them mate up to any Landcruiser transmission without huge effort.
But as always, if you throw enough money, chop enough metal and swear a bit, anything can be done:D

The best and easiest are the 14B and 15B Toyota dyna engines also found in the Coaster buses.
Unfortunately ,they dont grow on trees in NA but they were sold in S America.

The easiest non toyota diesel swap would be a chev diesel.

Howdy! Look for Rhino on the FJ55 Preservation Society at thee bottom of the page. He has done a very nice conversion with an Isuzu. I think he was Pig of the Month last month. John

The Isuzu 4BD1T was used in Isuzu 4 ton NPR's from about 85 to the mid 90's.
That's the subject of that thread that is around 24 pages long.

The Isuzu engine is a great choice (it was my first choice) but as for now there is not a way to mount it to the Toyota trans. There is however an adapter to mount it to a GM transmission and another adapter from the GM transmission to the Toyota transfer case. I think roscoFJ73 was talking about the Cummins engine when he mentioned the height and noise, the Isuzu engine is actually a pretty quiet engine and I don't think it requires much lift to install. Check the thread though, lots of great information.

I am currently in the process of getting all theparts together to do the 4bd1-t swap into an fzj80. The best source of information i could find on this motor is on www.isuzudieselswapper.com. This guy seems to have a really good setup for adapting it to a gm auto tranny and i also saw a guy on mud who has made an adapter for it to mount to a dodge nv4500. I have email him with several questions and he has been good about answering them for me. From what i have seen this motor is a very good candidate for a swap. Its easily rebuildable, not very tall, and not very long either. Its size is a 3.9. You can get a 4bd1t or 2t. The website explains the difference in all of the parts. Hope this helps

I am anxious to hear how the Isuzu does in the 80, I really wanted to go that route but I got tired of waiting to find the right Isuzu engine and a 6.2 just sort of fell into my lap. So far the engine has been great, just can't get the transmission working right yet. I will let you know since it is a 700R4 since most likely that is the route you will have to take. I think finding all the parts to swap an 80 to a standard would be hard to do around here. You might be able to get an Aussie to send you the parts but not sure if the RHD would cause a problem or not.
Keep us posted.

after driving the Isuzu 2 ton for a few tanks of fuel now i have to say it is a quiet engine, decent little girl but deffinately needs a turbo. it moves the 4 door 2ton down the road at 100 k/h okay but the surprising thing was the milage. it is amazing on fuel. looks about the same size as the 3B, feels about the same for power and torque...

that is all i know about these engines.

the Mits engiens that come in the Pajero, Delica, Strada are great engines, good power, great fuel economy and quiet... whether they are the same as the cab over i have no idea.
