Hey guys, I've hot forged a knife blank out of carbon steel for a Christmas gift for my girlfriend. I was wondering if anyone has a belt sander they'd be willing to let me come use next week to shore up both sides and perfect the taper.

I can probably do it with a dremel and files after annealing the metal but it would be a hell of a lot easier with something more flat to begin with.

I did this on a budget by building my own forge out of an old steel 4runner wheel. Can't really afford to buy a sander right now. Willing to pay with beer and s***ty conversation :D

I have one you can use. 9 mi south of I40 on hwy 337 (S 14). I like IPA😁

I have one. West side ABQ.

I have one 4 miles north of I40 off Mountain Valley Rd in Sandia Park but I hate IPA.

Can you share pictures of your forge? We are intrigued. 🤔

Sure., it's nothing special. I dug a small hole in the ground and a short trench to lay out a piece of scrap metal pipe attached to the air blower. Then I laid the wheel over it and backfilled most of the wheel with soil from my yard to channel the airflow upward. Clay would work better, but I don't think I have any and I wasn't going to keep digging.

At first I was forging down inside the wheel cavity until my neighbor found some metal grill screen and brought it to me. Now the coals sit on top and it's a lot more efficient. I coverd 3/4ths of the top with regular square pavers to insulate. I put split firewood around the inside of the rim to concentrate the coals and when they break down from the heat I rake them in and add more. I could fill the entire wheel with charcoal but it seems like a waste. You could do this with an old rotor in the ground too but the working area would be smaller.

I'm working on a tiny 15lb harbor freight anvil. Like I said, budget project... I had to mount it to a log with a piece of aluminum hammered into shape and deck screws, wrap it in heavy chain, and bury that 1.5 feet in the ground. Once it stopped jumping around on me the process became a lot easier. I'm using a 120v sliding dimmer switch to control the airflow. All this stuff I had lying around already and threw it together.

Creative problem solving. Always the best approach for saving time and money. Nice setup!

I have a 3hp 2x72 grinder and belts to grind and polish blades.

Its cool to see you blacksmithing. I inherited a 251 pound Soderfors anvil in almost new condition that will just be something I look at every day. I don't have much interest in metalwork anymore.

If you are looking for blacksmith tools I can hook you up with a guy.

Here is a knife my bro was making for me before he was killed. It was supposed to be a tanto. Made from damascus. Maybe someday I can find someone to complete it for me.
