A few years back [all right, maybe 8 or 9] when I had a little spare time, I decided that I didn't like the way the three panels of metal came together between the wheelwell, the tub, and the box in the tub. THIS ONE:

So I cut away most of the standing seam, and hammered at the rest until it was flat enough to weld them all together.

I was kind of curious at the time if there would be a long-term issue, but 8-9 years later, doesn't seam to be! Now I just gotta do the other side! :doh:
 
It looks like a place made for rust to incubate. I spray rust encapsulator into the two (open) seams then seal over all of it with a 3m sealant. Your weldup may be a better idea.
