Wow! That one has been put through the ringer. I’ve seen a lot of broken records (lol) almost as many as broken Prentisses.

Don’t really understand the reason behind trying to tighten the dog sh*t out of something that hard in a little 3” vise. The screw has 6 threads per inch so it should tighten down well enough for what it was built for. It’s like, damn, maybe you ought to get a bigger vise!

if you have a welder, you could build up that vise head, turn it down on a lathe and it'd look just nice.

Thinking about doing something similar to that. Probably cut the end off just shy of the bevel, drill and tap a 5/16” hole into the screw about 1/2” deep, then have a new end machined with a threaded 5/16” male end that will thread into the hole in the screw and then weld the two together. Should be plenty strong and straighter than what it is now.

Would have bought this if I needed one. Sharing if others are interested

ooooh, I love the tall ones...

nice to have oiling holes with the covered-screw vises. They should all do that.

@e9999 Yes! Reed started that with their R series vises in the late 40s. carried on with the C series later. It's a handy modification.

I've been following this thread for a while and figured I would add to it, unfortunately most of mine are chicom junk but they get the job done. I will admit that the 6in Wilton has been a great vice, I purchased it new about 22 years ago and have used a cheater bar on it quite a few times.
