Anyone know of a quality paint shop in the Seattle, WA area? I hear good AND bad things about Maaco so I'm looking for alternatives from TLC owners.

Thanks

There is a good body and paint shop over here in Poulsbo called, John's Body Shop.
John's Body Shop |
I don't work for them but I have had them work on my wife's car and they looked over a few things for me in the past. They are fair priced, good quality and are the kind of business that stands behind their work.
I know it is across the water but quality is quality.

I know you were looking for alternatives, but I just had my 80 painted by the downtown Macco. From what I understand they are all franchises and the quality varries widely from one to another. They did quite a bit of body work and it turned out great at a third of the cost off the other three quotes I got . I will admit that with a really up close inspection you can find a few minor defects in the paint here and there but it looks really good. The body work is solid. I'm in Seattle if you want to come see it in person. I'll post pics in a few.

What they did:
Welded fender flare holes
Repaired a number of small dents
Repaired rust around and under the windshield gasket
Repaied rust under roof rack mounts (the rack is now off)
Re worked the bottom front ds front fender and ds end of the front valence which had been damaged in an accident
Sanded out the original two tone
Painted body all silver
Painted the black around the windows
Painted the grill matte black
Painted the rear bumper ends and rear spoiler gloss black
Painted the rear cross member matte black

It looks like they sprayed with the door handles in place. I was staring at the gaskets between the handle and the body wondering if I should remove it or just paint over it.
Do you know if those were painted from the factory or were they black gaskets?
Looks like they did a good job. Nice rig.

FWIW

As an alternative, check out Fix Auto South Seattle - Georgetown - Seattle, WA. I use to deliver parts there all the time, and the quality is great when I saw vehicles ready for pick up.

Where ever you go, ask to see some vehicles finished that are ready to be delivered to customers. This will give you an idea of what to expect on the craftsmanship at that particular shop. By viewing the paint in sunlight if shinning in Seattle :p, (but not more than 20 secs, just reset your eyes because you can saturate the color and/or go color blind; advice from the painters I know); and/or using a 3M PPS Sun Gun Color Matching Light Kit 16400 if the shop has one for indoor viewing, you'll be able to catch the technicians errors and/or abilities to match the paint and metal work.

* the lighter the color of your eye, the more of the spectrum you can see, just a little info *

cap80 has an example of what you're seeking. It might be worth a trip to meet him and inspect the work from that shop. This could save you some funds in the long run. Using Macco can serve you well if you or the/any shop preps the vehicle good.

There is one other place that I know does great work and QC, Aurora Collision Center, on Aurora Ave. Ask for Tim, he's a straight-up guy. It is kinda pricey tho. I worked there a few years ago and always saw good things.

Cap - Do you mind telling us what that set you back? I'm looking to do a lot of the same things you did soon.

You know, there is a lot of info already posted in this thread.... what are you wanting to paint/accomplish with your (series)? Just thinking about this after posting here.

$2410 out the door, including a new windshield. The body work took a bit longer than they had expected but they stuck to their quote. I was really surprised originally since the other quotes were 7500-8500. I had seen another truck painted by them and was both impressed with the price and quality in that job. I dealt with Justin the assistant manager. I also spent about four hours striping and reassembling some things myself to make it a better job. I would use them again.

And in response to the earlier question, they did paint the doir handles in place, the gasket was black and not hard to change if the door is apart. The plastic was pretty oxidized so they look better silver, I figured I can easily be swapped out later.

Showcase in Totem Lake and McLeod's in Kirkland. Both are impeccable and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have had work done at both, they guarantee their work for the life of your ownership. If you need contact info, send me a pm.

That looks great cap80. Did they install the windshield per FSM? I need to replace the one on my '97 soon and don't want to deal w/ leaks. We all know how much rain we get up here.:)

Not the first time. Leaked. Reinstalled per FSM. Perfect. And there has been plenty of rain since.
