One wire alternator with pulley and "J" bracket mount adapters:

1975 to 1987 -- 4.2L -- 140 Amp (requires supplied J-bracket) $245.00

I'm looking to upgrade my FJ40 to a higher amp alternator. I like that this is a "kit" in that it appears to be "plug & play" for the most part.

Anyone used these guys?
Any gotchas?
Anyone have other "kit" like options?

The "one wire" (i.e. GM) alternators will require you to bypass your stock voltage regulator because they are internally regulated. Not hard to do, but not plug 'n play either.
At some point of amps, you will fry the stock ammeter. I don't remember what that limit is, but if you're over it then you'll have to accommodate it somehow. I replaced my ammeter with a voltmeter when I put a 200-amp alternator on mine.

You'll probably want to beef up your stock cables for the alternator, starter, and battery.

Mean Green is another (expensive) option; I'm happy with mine.

What did you do for a voltmeter?

Inexpensive Autometer available at most auto parts stores. You may have to get creative to mount it in the instrument cluster though - I used a kit made by a mud member, but he's not making them any more.
