Anyone made a custom mount for the factory PTO winch of the 7* series. Looking for some ideas of a low profile mount that doesnt feel like i have a cement mixer bunged onto the front of my bullbar.

Is there anyway to move the winch slightly higher and slightly further into the body. I know i cant move it heaps because of the driveshafts hitting the radiator but maybe a few cm here and there.

Its actually off my truck now because i hated the approach angle so much. But i would prefer to put it back on, Cheers guys!

Heres it off

Mine looks the same just not by choice. Was in a accident and ins. wont replace it. I am looking for the same idea. My thought was to make a new front crossmember out of channel and tuck it in as far as possible, then mount the fairlead to that. I figure that if I mess around and get the fit right I should be able to shave off almost two inches. Off there I will build a "bumper" that is a low key and tucked in as much as possible, kinda Baja style. Waiting for my bud to finish his bumpers so we can get it in his shop, will post pics when I start. Even with the "sun deck" bumper on the stock front the approch isnt that bad ad it sure is nice when you need something to climb on. Just m2c

Ps please post up pics if you come up with something

lol sundeck bumper! Yeah i ripped that off the day i got it! Yeah i know the appproach angle isnt really that bad it doesnt even hinder it worse that the leaf and shackles but i think its just a mindset thing. You drive alot better knowing you havnt got this massive piece of metal sticking out of the front.

Yep yep let me know how it goes! and plenty of pics

edit: just found a guy doing a custom bumper on a very nice troopie (cut into a ute) he also has a PTO winch and i have asked him to show me more detail

Actually, I kind of like the sundeck bumper on my '60! It causes folks to think twice before cutting me off :) That's an important thing here in Central America where almost every car has "battle scars".

It also comes in handy at border crossings when sometimes you can wait for an hour or two and chairs are not provided.

but the approach angle.... think of the approach angle! *in think of the children voice*

it would take some work but you could run the drive above the front cross member and move the winch up 4-5" you will need to figure out the saft configuration and locate the winch according to the clearence by the rad and power steering box...

the first thing i did to all my PTO cruisers was get rid of it. that sheer pin location is lunicrice since it breaks only when under load and you are only under load when you don't want it to break AND usually up to the headlights in mud and water or snow... who in their right minds want to crawl under their rig to fix it when you can not even see it?

the whole idea of a winch is to get yourself out of the predicement that you just got yourself into, not sit there looking pretty.

there is my idea, take it for what it is worth...

BTW, there is a factory upgraded pin for the winch, you will have to search the site for the number...i am too lazy to dig it up again...

Yeah i took mine off soon after i got it but decided put it back on just incase i need it... im sure if i really need it ill use a snatch block to lessen the load. But yes your right it is a bit of a catch 22, shear pin breaks under load... and your only under load when you get stuck.
As for moving the shaft over the cross member you would have to replace the radiator= too much work. The radiator is practically sitting on top of the cross member. I am in the middle of making a front bumper that tucks the winch as much into the body as it will go which practically halfs the distance it sticks out. Ill post pics when im done!

yes they did! I have a pic of it somewhere, they had to cut out a section of the front where the PTO box sticks out down the bottom... only problem is i dont have a arb bumper to be slicing and dicing atm :(

thats cool thanks for posting. I was thinking of doing something similar to the sides. And maybe a single hoop on top for lights. Looks good though

PTO Winch Shearpin Upgrade #90240-05004 , drill 13/64th to fit

That is seriously cool. must be pretty hard to fit? Maybe a bashplate could be used to stop it clogging with mud so much to let it free spool. Thanks for the post

I agree about the precariousness of an underbelly mount for a pto winch. There are other problems that I see, including a lack of gear lubrication when/if mounted upside down.

I have wondered if it is possible to run a pulley off a front mounted winch, through tubing and out the rear....for rear extraction. One could also run an electric winch from the bed of the truck for the same purpose.

Or....wheel with friends behind you.
