I'm sure this may be a longshot, but I was wondering if there is anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area that has a 3rd GEN 4runner with tundra brakes? I need to replace my front brakes so figured I would upgrade. The problem is that I haven't been able to confirm if my wheels will clear the calipers.

If someone has this setup, would you mind meeting up so I can try one of my wheels?

I have the set-up, but I'm in Wilmongton.
There is a thread in T4R or yotatech or something that lists which stock rims will fit.

I run them on my 2000 4Runner. The only grinding I had to do was a small bit on the dust shield. Sorry I'm not closer to try out a wheel.

Even if the caliper does not clear I can't imagine it would need more than just a tiny shave, provided you have 16" and not 15" wheels.

Better yet, I have some new (take off) 17" 2015 4Runner wheels you might like. Cheap.

:D

Glad to get together, but there is a ton of info about 16" vs 199mm vs 231mm tundra brakes with stock wheels. Another option is spacers, but the trim on the dust shield looks pretty easy - not sure, you may need to trim anyway.

If you haven't already, some good info below to check out:

You may want to consider the 231/233mm tundra upgrade. You would have to go with 17" wheels in that case.

My 16" fit with the larger calipers.
WeTher they fit depends on which design you have.

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah I've read a lot of of the threads on the T4R forum. The problem is I can't find any good data on whether the wheel I have will fit. I know some FJ cruisers had this wheel and some newer 4runners but the only thing I could find was mention of a FJ 5 spoke wheel that would fit with a spacer but not picture confirmation or anything. That was also referenced from other threads and couldn't ever find the original source. I'd like to do the 231mm but don't want to use spacers or grind wheels. If it happens that my wheels don't fit, I'll just install the 199mm. Here is a pic of my wheels.

Any volunteers for a test fit on your 231mm?

I can't speak to any others, but I can guarantee that ^that stock 16" 4Runner rim will fit over the larger tundra calipers.

I think we all have the 199mm caliper's right, vs the 231mm? You are welcome to come over and try on my truck - later today, THU or FRI night or next weekend.

Next idea .... Purchase the 231mm's and mock up the fit before doing the complete install. Return if no good (or decide to keep the big ones and grind them down to size)

EDIT: FYI .... this is the wheel I run with 231mm calipers.

Mine are 231mm as well.

@RedHeadedStepChild @Rice
Too bad neither of you are close

@Rice. That's true. I guess I could do that and plan it so the parts store will still be open in case I have to switch.

Sure you don't want some über cool 17" wheels? :D

Which wheel are you running?

Sorry. I just got new tires and it took me a while to find the wheels I have. Thanks for the offer though.

Which wheel are you running?

I posted a pic earlier in the thread. 5 spoke , 16" that came one FJ cruisers and some newer 4runners I believe

I was finally able to confirm my rims will clean the 231mm tundra brakes. I'm thinking about doing the swap sometime in the next couple of weeks. Anyone around Durham want to help me out in exchange for beer and pizza?

Just a word of caution. When I put together the 199mm kit that's on @weejub T4R I was originally planning to run the larger 231mm calipers but after reading through several threads of Master Cylinder volume issues with the larger calipers I opted for the 199s. There's a decent number of guys that have stepped up to the larger 231mm calipers only to have spongy braking due to the 3rd Gen 4Runner Master Cylinder not having the volume capacity that the Tundra MC has.

For what it's worth the 199mm calipers are more than adequate for the light duty 3rd Gen 4Runner versus the stockers. You'll save some money going with the smaller calipers and they are more readily available.

Just my .02

Well damn. I already got the 231's. Guess I can try it out and if not see if someone on the T4R forum wants them. Thanks for the info though.

Definitely try it.
Your pedal WILL be softer, but I feel I get better modulation with the 231s.

My account of pedal difference with 231's installed was minimum. Install, drive, and smile.

My son and I are upgrading the rotors and calipers to tundra breaks. In the process, his dust shields are rusted pretty bad. One came completely off as it was hanging on by a thread.

I looked at the part which isn’t that expensive. My son read that you can cut the dust shield and it’s easier to install, instead of having to take off the hub. We certainly aren’t interested in a huge job, but we want to make sure what we do is good for years to come. Any advice?
