I posted a few days ago about being unhappy with the climate control system in my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. I decided the only way I was going to know for sure if I'd be happy with a Land Cruiser or LX-470 was to go try one out.

Over this past weekend, I went to the local Toyota dealer. They didn't have any Land Cruisers in stock, so the salesman had me try a Sequoia for fit (I'm big enough I'm not comfortable in a 4-Runner). There was plenty of room, but it really didn't answer my questions about a Land Cruiser. They really wanted me to commit to buying a Land Cruiser having never sat in one before.

So I got on the web, and Land Cruisers are hard to find in the Boston area. OTOH, there are a reasonable number of LX-470's at the Lexus dealers. So today, I took a trip to the local Lexus dealer. I decided I should try out the GX-470 before deciding to spend the money on the LX-470. The GX was really nice, but just didn't have enough elbow or leg room for me. The LX was a nice fit and after a pretty good test drive, I'm satisfied that the climate control system will give me enough choice to find a comfortable temperature.

I worked out a deal that I'm happy with - I'm getting a little better on the trade-in than I expected - a little more than the high-end of the Edmunds / Kelly Blue Book values (also more than I owe) and got a reasonable discount on the LX-470 (again based on what Edmunds said to expect in my area).

Compared to other car dealers, the Lexus dealership was very clean, the people friendly, not very pushy, and the process of agreeing to a price and filling out the loan application was less hassle than usual.

They need to track down either a "Classic Silver Metallic" or "Sand Dollar Pearl" with the options I want - basically the "base" model with roof rack and rear spoiler.

So thanks for the warm welcome the other day replying to my first post and I hope to be a regular contributor here.

So where do I sign up for the course on how to use all the gizmos in this thing? :)

G'day and welcome to the forum!

Regards the gizmos...........first step
RTFM!!!
Read the f....... manual!
3 times at least, then go and play with them!

Wow, 2006 LX470! Congratulations!

Awesome! Welcome to the board and definitely read the manual!!! Hopefully you'll be another satisfied customer and enjoy the board while your at it!

What region of the country are you in?

I almost always read through manuals when I purchase something -and this definitely won't be an exception. I know how to use the transfer case lever, diff lock, AVS, and AHC - those are all obvious (and having owned a Land Rover in the past, the real transfer case lever is a familiar sight). The navigation system and the other controls within the touchscreen interface are the things that will take the time to learn - I've never used a navigation system before.

First mod will be to remove the third row seats and put them into safe storage :D.

What region of the country are you in?

I live in Billerica, MA which is about 20 miles northwest of Boston. I work in Boston.

I think you'll be much happier with the service provided by the Lexus dealership as compared to most Toyota dealerships. They go out of their way to provide the highest level of service possible.

Granted you'll pay a bit more for rates if you have them service your vehicle there...but they'll throw in a loaner for all warranty work -- and if you get to know your service tech well, you'll probably get that loaner every time...

Welecome aboard :flipoff2:

Oh and the other thing, read the FAQ on this forum, it has lots of great info which will slow the question asking down, and don't forget to use the search function, tons of stuff out there!

Boston area....I think.:grinpimp:

As above read the manual - occasionally I drive the LX470 and I still dont know how to run the Nav. Getting the Rear entertainment operating was kinda odd (wth should it broadcast through the radio?) but its a nice environment for a long haul with kids

Between that the 04 GX and the 99 LC, I prefer the GX - tho I drive the LC daily anymore. I really dont mind the lack of gizmos.

In general I agree with your observation of the "experience" - but Im annoyed when I'm told an air filter's going to run me $46.00 and Im a pariah for changing my own oil.

Luck

I'm wondering if a few people missed the smiley face at the end of my post - I'll most certainly read the manual - overall the operation of things seems pretty straightforward. I've never used a navigation system before, so there'll be a bit of a learning curve there. Overall everything seemed pretty intuitive. But as a software engineer, I hope I can figure out how to use the navigation system without too much confusion :D.

I'm not getting the rear DVD player or the nightvision option - I'm getting the "base" model, if it can be called that.

I do have one question though - where is the DVD for the DVD Navigation system? Is it something that can only be changed by the dealer, or is there a way to load a DVD that isn't obvious?

I'd definitely prefer fewer gizmos and really didn't want the navigation system, but I just wasn't comfortable in the GX. I'm a big guy and it was just too tight - my left arm didn't have any mobility which eliminated the GX from my short list. Otherwise, the GX seemed very nice and I'm sure I could be very happy with it. I'd love to have the option to get a true base model Land Cruiser / LX-470 without navigation, leather, power EVERYTHING, sun roof, fancy stereo system, etc..... Would be a much more affordable vehicle and would encourage more people to take them out to play.

The buying experience was very much like what I went through when I bought a Land Rover back in '97. Much more pleasant than the typical dealership.

I'd love to own one of those. Congrats, and just know I am extremely jealous of you right now. Post up some pics

go wth the classic silver over the sand dollar. sand dollar is kind of a "dog" color for LX 470s, silver will have better resale, if thats of interest to you at all. just my $.02

The salesman called today and said they found a classic silver (definitely my first choice) with the options I'm looking for. Should be able to pick it up Monday or Tuesday.

In general, navigation systems have been very useful to me. But understand they do have faults. Treat it more like a moving map and directory. Saves time and arguments with the co-driver. Great for things like: should I fill gas now in this boony town or can I wait till the next city to get gas? I need to get a new tire, where is the next tire shop? I am craving Italian food, where is the nearest Italian restaurant? Etc.

well, I guess buying a new LX to get good A/C is as good a reason as any...! :)

Welcome aboard, and I hope you like being part of the 100/LX community !!

I personally like living a bit more dangerously...

DO I have enough gas to get to the next station ?...WILL I be able to find my destination, and if so, HOW am I gonna find my way back home ?...WHAT if I have a blow-out ( and WHO is gonna fix it ?) ?... CAN I survive on these sunflower seeds for the next 500 miles, and if not ...WHERE THE H#LL IS A MCDONALDS ??!!

How did mankind ever make it without modern technology ??!! ;)

ENJOY !!
