landfills must be full of 2lt engines and another one just got added to the heap...mine. after having the head replaced in may, the turbo decided it was his turn and delivered a piece of the impeller into #4 valve and cylinder/piston, delivering a virtual death blow to the 2lt. all my sinning has come back to haunt me. good riddance! not being a sucker for punishment (hmm.....i bought it, didn't i?), i don't want to replace it with another 2lt.

so, my question to you bigger techies than i is; what advice do you have regarding a replacement engine? it's a '90 prado and in beautiful shape and i already have a lot of coin invested, so i don't want to give up on her.

Don't landfill it! Part it out on ebay. Interested in selling the injection pump? Send me a PM.

Bolt-in options in include the 3L and the 1KZ-TE. There was a thread on the JDM parts section where someone was selling engines from Japan. I'll see if I can find it...

Can't find the thread, sorry. Maybe someone else remembers it...I think it was an American guy bringing diesels in. Can't remember his nickname.

Honestly, the easiest and least expensive route is to go with another 2L-TE. That way you've got a whole engine worth of spares sitting there, including a new head. What happened with your turbo is quite rare and not an indication that the 2L-TE is prone to all different kinds of mechanical failures.

My two bits.

can you elaborate since there could be a good market for those that have lost their heads/engines but love the truck...

1KZ, 4 cylinder 3 litre. Nice motor.

I doubt it will be a direct bolt in though.

It will bolt on if you use the bell housing of the 1KZ. Had it done to my'91 LJ78 when the engine started blowing white smoke at start up and when idle for a few minutes. I was advised against having it overhauled and instead replace it with a 1KZ.

i forgot to mention that the broken piece from the turbo damaged the head, too. s*** happens! thanks all for your input.

bummer. i am more and more glad i didn't buy a prado last year when i had the chance.

the guy who installed my windshield told me these guys are now getting into importing diesels. no idea if it is true but assuming G&S doesn't stock anything it's worth a call.

does it have to be diesel? if it doesnt go with the 2jz (later mdel supra) they are cheapish and go extremely well. there isa guy over here replaced his 2lte with a 1kz then it shat itself as well, and has gone to the 2jz. they have awsome power as well (in low range 1st it read something like just under 800 hp;p)

hummm, makes me wonder if it might have something to do with the driver...
;^)

what kind of shape was the KZ in to begin with? how many km? the history...

we never got the KZ here so i have no idea as to the reliability issues...

I have a 1KZ-TE in my prado (original). It has a lot of power but uses enormous amounts of fuel. When I use it around town I think I do 1lt every 6 to 7 km. Highway (if you can call the roads here like that) 1lt every 8 km. Luckily with the gas prices being the lowest in the area ( U$ 0.20 a liter) I do not complain that much.
Had some problems with the oil return pipe, they repaired it the first time, second time they replaced it with a hose but left the begin and end so they could fit the hose. Then it completely broke off where it enters the engine (huge oilspill).
Other then that it smokes a little even after cleaning the injectors.
But all in all a nice engine with lots of power.

thanks Andy, did the tranny imput shaft have to be changed?

Wayne I don't think they had to change that. But what I do know is that they had to re-position the engine mounts because it would definitely hit the steering gear box. In Manila its illegal to drive a right hand drive vehicle. Our road system is the same as the US and Canada, so my vehicle's steering had to be transferred to the left side. No problems so far with the turning radius. The 1KZ seems to be performing better than tha 2LTE. I average about 8kms to a litre on log straight drives but that figur drops when in the city.

thanks Brunei, lots of power is reason enough for the swap and 250,000 is nothing to sneeze at...
congrates
