Exploring adding an EFI kit to my FJ60 for more reliability and smoother starts on cold days. Looking at both the Howell and Holly Sniper kits offered here:

TBI Fuel Injection Kits — MOSLEY MOTORS

Any other options I am missing? From what I have ready seems more have gone the Holly Sniper route here and have had good luck and really enjoy.

My FJ60 is smogged, would I need to (or should I) de-smog for an EFI kit install?

Still reading more here, but welcome any advice/thoughts before I go to far down this path.

A properly running 2F and carb will start easily at any temperature and altitude (Above 10°F).
Installing EFI to try fix that issue if it exists is ignoring the problem.
Ditto with reliability. A properly running 2F and carb is probably the most reliable engine Toyota ever made.

Well that is where I am frustrated. Had a fully rebuilt carb installed and a full tune up in Dec. Still doesn't crank right over on a cold day and after running it and warming the engine up 15-20 miles. When I go to restart my rig after in town for 30-45 minutes it does not want to fire right up either (wife rolls here eyes as I crank away....). Took it to another local mechanic and he said he could find nothing wrong with my engine, my carb or my setup (still smogged). He also said it was a bit finicky starting up, but ran strong once going. He was the one who suggest the EFI kit, as he installed one on a FJ40 and it ran much better and was more reliable. Wish there was a great Toyota specialist were I am in Sullivan County NY......

a carburetor engine doesn't start like FI engine. When cold, you need to prime the intake with gas by pressing the accelerator pedal a few times. When warm/hot, you press the accelerator pedal only once, and hold it open to prevent the engine from flooding. Of course you release the pedal as soon as the engine catches. Refer to the FJ60 owners manual for proper instructions. You do have to "learn" your own engine to know when it is cold and when it is warm/hot.

For FI, regardless warm or cold you just turn the ignition key. In fact it doesn't do anything to pump the accelerator pedal before starting.

My FJ60 was a booger to start cold, even though the accelerator pump in the carb was squirting in plenty of gasoline with every pedal stroke. I then installed a block heater on a timer, since it was my wife's truck at the time. I'll give it credit for starting (reluctantly) at 15 below zero F once while elk hunting, but the cold starting was annoying on the truck for the many years I owned it.

I would trust a properly set up carb and choke any day. The problem is that most rebuilt carbs that are done by someone who doesn’t know what’s going on are a significant loss in reliability over someone building it like JimC.

My truck runs great desmogged with a city racer Fuji carb. I only want efi for the altitude compensation.

The guy who rebuilt my carb in Dec knows Toyota well and has a good reputation with 2F carbs. I am now thinking my issues could be a vacuum leak in my manifold. Going to test that to see if that could be the real issue here. @RLMS gave me some good testing tips.
