Grounds are good, batteries are good, but when I went to start up after a month of being away, nothing. when I turn the key to the position just before ignition the fuel light below on the right does not come on, when I then proceed to turn but there is nothing at all. I know the system has power to a degree as my glow light on the left comes on at the push of the button, also head lights work. I am thinking it may be the starter relay? When I checked under the hood the Edic arm was extented in the fuel cut off position, took the arm off, forward lever will move by hand fore and aft, the lever near the firewall ontop of the EDIC unit seems stuck forward in the fuel cut off position, very stuck....would this be connected with the starter relay electics and as it is stuck in "cut off" disable the connection needed for ignition? Am on the breech of pulling the EDIC unit and having a look but thought some advice would be a better choice.

Clean the battery terminals well. You can get power for everything but cranking if the terminals are dirty or corroded.

I have run over the terminals and tightened down no luck. I am hoping someone will chime in concerning the implications of the EDIC lever that controls the arm being seized in the forward fuel cut off position. If anyone is running a 3b and has a chance could they let me know if they can move the lever ontop of the EDIC unit by hand?

The metal arm connecting the EDIC motor to the fuel control lever pops off both ends. Pop the arm off. The fuel control lever should move backward to the run position on it's own and stay there. Positions are: Forward to stop, all the way back to over inject for starting, in the middle for run.

You can then stop/start/run the truck without the EDIC.

If you pop the arm, and still nothing, then you have al least rules some things out.

This post will self distruct in one day...

Already popped the arm and the fuel control lever moves in all positions with no problem. My concern was at the other end, the end that controls the arm. When couldn't start up, I checked over the engine and found the EDIC arm completely extended, which means the lever that controls the arm was jammed forward and still is. Should I remove the EDIC unit and attemp to find out why its jammed? What would cause a jam...ect. Also am tying this to my current absence of ignition/fuel light because of the existance of an electrical link between ignition and the EDIC via the starter Relay...I think....?

I think the problem is a "no crank" problem rather than an EDIC problem.

You say turning the key does nothing... check connections in your fuse box (corroded or fuses that have internal errors) BUT more importantly check the fusible links at the battery.

--->> In an 1982 BJ42 there are a few green plugs that have short sections of fusible link that can go wrong. Also, the plugs themselves can have connector problems... it is quite common to have trouble here in an older BJ42.

If you are getting a crank, but no start, that's a different issue.

If you're getting a click, but no start... or the EDIC arm is moving over at the turn of the key, but no crank then you need to check starter connections and then finally the starter solenoid (copper contacts inside which are replaceable with new ones from a parts store for about $5).

Also, the 1982 BJ42 did not have a separate glow button from the factory. They were equipped with a "super glow" system (which can be pain in the butt when it goes bad).

Thanks guys. Am going to have a run over everything on the weekend. I would like to know if I should attempt to free up the Edic arm control lever on top of the edic unit (have removed the arm already) that is in the cut off fuel position. Also the truck has 82 markings..but I definitly have what I would call a glow button on the panel to the left of the steering wheel.

No, as John suggested if this is a "no crank" or "no click" situation forcing that arm will only do damage. It moves when powered, and it sounds like you are not getting power to anything. Forcing that arm to move will not suddenly let the engine crank over; it simply moves the fuel control lever. Look to your batteries (check voltage and load test), fuses, fusible links, grounds etc first.

John, search for "Wilson Switch" for a nice clean fix of this system when the super glow goes bad.

Have you tried boosting? Sounds like a good ol' dead battery to me.

Thanks gb, I have installed such switches several times, just didn't know the reference "wilson switch" (wasn't about swapping out volleyballs on some guy stuck on a desert island after all).
