Sorry for the amateur question but in regards to doing an oil change..

If you don't fill the oil filtre with oil, presumably, you don't want oil to be spilling everywhere, won't the engine be running dry for a bit?

And also, do I need to remove the big metal plate on the underside to get to the oil drain plug?

I've never tried doing an oil change before but I really want to try it out myself.

I know the procedures but was always too chicken to try it out on my WRX :(

The truck in question is a BJ73

y're talking about engine-oil change?

If you don't fill the oil filtre with oil, presumably, you don't want oil to be spilling everywhere, won't the engine be running dry for a bit?

Yes, you're right. There won't be oilpressure for a few seconds. This happens all the time when starting the engine. It just lasts a bit longer. That's why some install a pre-oiler. A system that brings up the pressure before starting by means of a seperate (electric) pump.

And also, do I need to remove the big metal plate on the underside to get to the oil drain plug?

Normally not for the engine oil unless there is extra, non standard, body armor.
Make sure you drain the engine and not the gearbox/transfer!!

I've never tried doing an oil change before but I really want to try it out myself.

Have you watched somebody doing it? Why not first do that, then do it while somebody that does know is watching you?
Would be a pity ruining your engine because of a beginners-mistake!

I know the procedures but was always too chicken to try it out on my WRX :(

Are you sure about the procedure?

The truck in question is a BJ73

Have fun

I never bother filling the oil filter. Wont hurt for a few seconds.
The pistons and bearings will have some oil residue coating them.

Im not familar with a 3B oil pan,but if you cant get to the plug ,off it comes.
If the plate has an access hole in it leave it on .You will probably have to use a socket to get the plug off.
Make sure your container will handle the volume of oil:D

Thanks for the advice.

If I got it down correctly, basically, it's drive around the block a bit to get the oil warm enough so it'll come out easily and quickly.

Pull the drain plug, drain the oil. Put the plug back up.

Add the oil, and take out old oil filter then add a bit of new oil to the seal onto the new filtre and put it on.

Done?

correct.
and make sure you have enough of the correct oil-it needs to made for a diesel engine.
a 3b will take 8 quarts, a 2H close to 12.
go for it.
tou might want to have a gasket handy for the drain plug. if not, make sure you don't lose the old one. gaskets are like 50cents from toyota, and the same for all older cruisers.
the plug is 24mm.

Just one quick addition, when you take the oil filter off the engine, make sure the little ring gasket comes off with the filter. If its still stuck to the block when you put the new filter on you will have trouble. Usually just a black rubber ring and they come off with the filter about 95% of the time, but I have seen issues before with it. Nothing to get nervous over though. Always a great feeling to be doing your own stuff to your truck :)

Thanks! I would have completely missed that if I was doing it for the first time, thinking it's supposed to stay there or something Lol

sloppy rear

have a 92 fj80 130000 miles with sloppy rearend ie it shifts hard under power and torgue...toyota dlr has said replace front diff (I dont understand why) 2 trany shops say tranny is perfect. who can tell me what problem might be,

common problem on the full time units. the front diff wears first...

K, one last thing before I go ahead change the oil probably sometime this week

Just want to double-check.. The screw that is circled in red is the oil drain plug right?

affirmative. let us know how it goes!

erm... if you're really worried about lack of oil pressure on startup after an oil change, you could disable your ignition (I take off the dizzy rotor on my FJ75, 3F) and crank the motor over with the starter until you get some pressure reading on the oil pressure gauge. I don't know how you'd prevent a diesel from starting though ...

Help! I can't get the oil filter off. I've tried the method with putting a screw driver throug it but it still won't budge! what can I do? :(

I've drained all the oil already and there's holes through the oil filter

Are you sure you are going the right way?
Righty-tighty, lefty loosey.

You could also try going down to Canadian tire and getting an oil filter wrench.

Cheers,
N.

Or I prefer this type.
You use your socket wrench and when you turn it the fingers tighten and keep crushing the filter until it comes off. Sometimes tricky to get started, but they are the best.

Yeah, I guess i'll have to get an oil wrench. Tried going to the left as much as possible. Not working :(

It's also not the best angle to work with either. so much other stuff in the way

I know what you mean. It's hard to get a good grip, especially with oil on your hands. Go for the second one (3 finger one), They always works great. You will have that thing off in a jiffy. If Canadian tire does not have it try Lordco, NAPA, Princess Auto etc...

Cheers,
Nick.

If you are Ghetto like me you can use an old leather belt to get it offsometimes also.

Well I got it off, Canadian Tire didn't have any wrenches that were big enough Lol

so I went to Lordco and used a strap wrench and it came off in a jiffy..

I finished! Only took forever because I didn't have the tools to take out the filter and found out I didn't have an oil filter so I drove out to ATEB to grab one and back

Otherwise, it went well

EDIT: How do you get oil out of your hair?

How long should this oil change last me before I have to do another one. I changed at 170,000

I change it every 7500 kms (4000 miles)

EDIT: How do you get oil out of your hair?

Rinse your hair with diesel... then petrol....then a good shampoo and rubb it with veggie oil.......:crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: ;p ;p ;p ;p

Oh, and : don't get near a fire when executing the first two exercises. !!!!:bounce: :bounce2: :bounce: :bounce2:

(In case anyone would seriously try this: the writer of this does not accept any responsebility for the exercises related to hearcleaning. A normal wash with a good shampoo is sufficient to remove grease or oil from your hair)
