So I finally pulled the leaking Rad in my 1991 Lj-78, took it to the rad shop. Guy went through it the next day a quoted me $550 cause it needs a new core, I bitched and complained, a few hours later he calls back with a new quote $440.

Wow this seems like a pile of money, what do you guys think?

$300 for my 3 core rad to be rebuilt.

How much are new radiators? I use HZJ7* radiators thst my shop gets made in Taiwan that are very heavy duty for $420.

i should have expaned my post, i paid that money for a custom 3 X 3/4 tube rad which is the max you can run with the stock tanks. increases the cooling by 33%.

i just had my rad redone a week ago in calgary. Went from a three core to a four core, had a leak sealed etc. Total cost including removal and re installation and fluids etc, was almost $800 bucks with tax. Brutal. A1 radiator did the work.

However, i just got back from a trip out to the queen charlotte islands, and it made a difference, runs cooler for sure.

you could have bought my parts truck for just a whee bit more and had a rear locker and a winch...

You will get what you pay for - depends where the core comes from and what density it is.

Prices will range from $400 to $600 or more for a decent re-core.

LJ78 rads are not generally available anywhere, so you're at the mercy of the rebuilder.

I agree depends on the density.. But with the price of copper these days it's going to run proabably $400 min. I called to get a quote on changing my 3 to a 4 core and without seeing it was a ~400 estimate. Depended on the core and what was needed.

we didn't add a row to mine, we went from ?(3X)1/2" tubes to (3X)3/4" tubes

you figure a new rad cap will stop the the overflow, or will that added pressure that wants to escape, turn into another 2lte blown head.

Might be the root of all that is evil in these little devils

250$ for my 4 core to be redone 2 years ago.... I ordered in a new one for 300, but it must have been for a gasser the inlet and outlet were in the wrong spot (of course the only one they listed)... they did a great job on the recore... I always figured the 4 core rad on my 3b NA was kind of overkill, expecially seeing as how even getting the thermostat to open in the winter without a rad blanket is a chore in itself that's with a brand new toyota thermostat, I guess that just diesel more than the rad tho....
