gold gold gold..

the "popsticle key" reminds me of my BJ40 woes.. that still continue today

during an awesome trek through the fitzgerald river national park on the south coast (western OZ - near bremer bay) i had an interesting experience..

my good friend 'borrowed' by 40's keys to dump some s*** in my truk (he was on his 250cc KTM at the time - which travelled on the back of his fj45)
so he dumped his s*** off and promtly returned - on the way back it consisted of some sideways action, a bit of riding on water in the shallows on the beach and some more sideways action..

he gets back, and i ask for my keys..

he searches his RHS pockets.. nothing.. LHS pockets.. nothing still.. pats himself down.. and once again.. nothing
yep no keys??
in the middle of friggin butt-:censor:-nowhere i have no keys..

luckily i had a spare door key in the glovebox.. but they dont turn the ignition over..
i try all my mates 45 keys.. one of his 'cut' keys finally works (the OEM one didn't)..
that got me back on the road at least..
but after a short while that was no good and im stuck without a key to start my car

now im not going to tell you where i live, and if you own a 40 series.. its relatively easy to hot wire.. if you could call it that.. lol

but basically for the last 2 years i have been starting my truk with a srcrew driver, a can opener.. anything with a flat blade that can fit into the little black thingo.. lol

i never thought of a posticle stick tho.. hahahahaha

it was the stearing lock that had me stumped for the most part.. but some tap tap tap with a hammer and other :wrench: and i busted that sucker off!! after a good few days of trying - and cursing!:bang:

its a PITA tho.. i have to dick around to turn it off.. every time!
and i think if i ever got pulled over by the FUZZ (amongst other 30 year old truk road safety issues) i wouldn't be able to drive it away.. lol

luckily it's only a 12V vehicle.. haha

Been to Western Canada?

In BC there are soo many places that are lightly populated you can truly get away from it all.
And for wildlife, they wander thru my yard all the time. Moose/deer and bears. And I'm a townie.

Western Canada is unreal; there is no better place on Earth.

I live on Vancouver Island, in a town of about 18-24k-the largest this far North. There is a rediculous amount of logging roads on my Island, they go everywhere; wildlife is abundant. My cousin once remarked 'Hey theres wild cows!' while riding in my cousins Heep, and he was right I suppose - there were about 20 elk running across the road behind us; this was after my cousin got us stuck in mud past the diffs and transfer case.

There is no better place on Earth; come visit Western Canada.

pull off the stearing column cover, take out the two screws that hold the white thing with all the wires going to it. :) Theres your ignition. :D

Just replaced my batteries in the 24v BJ74.
Connected them exactly as the previous ones were.
Earth to neg1, pos1 to neg2, pos2 to pos cable.
Turned the key and got a sound like a punctured coke can, Half the pos1 terminal melted and fused to the bridging cable.

Any ideas about what the problem could be?

Were the terminals cleaned (where the terminal meets the post) and connected properly and tightened?
If not resistance between post and terminal can be that high that the resulting heat melts the post.
Have seen that happen before.

Thanks Ron, I cleaned the pos terminal (cable) because it had some build-up, didnt clean the others as I didnt notice any dirt. Fastened all the terminals (tighter than usual).

Any other possible causes?
The new batteries are 70Ah which I presume is more than the previous ones, but as far as I know, that should not make a difference to the current flowing, only to the length of time for which one can draw the required current?

Apparently you did what you had to do. Only thing I can come up with is that the terminals are out of shape and the contact area with the post is poor.
This happened to one of the guys with whom I went to Kazakhstan. Just to be on the safe side he installed new batts.
The second day in the trip one of the posts melted. I was able to drill a hole and bolt the terminal to what remained of the post. Then with the help of a burner, we melted lead shavings (mainly drips we collected) and filled the hole as well as we could. It lasted the whole trip, even half a year later on he had not replaced it.

No not with this kind of differences. Might be a problem if you had put an extra starter and electric winch and energized all that stuff at the same time:D No just kidding. Even if you would have 90 Ah batts----no problem.
battmelt.webp

Did you meet Borat?:D

Yeah I connected it that way, and didnt get any sparks,

I used a piece of metal usually to start it :P

And a nail head, and the popsicle stick.

My keys flew out of the ignition the first time i drove it and the keys went through a hole in the floor i guess, so thats what ive been using.

Its not on start, gauranteed.

OMG ROFLMAO I made the mistake of taking a quick peek at this thread during a break at work and now I am completely useless, breaking out laughing uncontrollably remembering some of your quotes. I am truly glad that you got your problem sorted out but more than that I truly love the fact that this site has such a wide range of folks here, all helpful and with a good senses of humor.

Lol, I'm glad that you like it.

Balls Deep.

Facing the engine from the front to back, LHD (driver side) battery. Then on the passenger side is the other battery, how do I connect the 2 batteries. Thanks
