alternator vs. generator

Generators have permanent magnets and alternators require some current to create the electromagnetic field.

READ AWAY ;)

Generators run direct current and alternators...well run alternating current. Also, given the same size, an alternator will be able to put out more power.

At one time, generators and starters were one in the same. Started your engine and charged your batteries. In the olden days you had to run on the highway with your lights on to prevent overcharging your battery.
Alternators do produce AC, but convert it back to DC via diodes.
Several Austin motors used generators AND had a drive gear on the backside to spin the tach, too!
Not that you needed to know any of this.....:)

Alternators being able to put out more power is particularly true at lower RPM's. This is where generators are at their worst.

Max,

I still have the generator that was on my truck when I bought it. Remind me before the next RS meeting and I'll bring it with me...
