Guys, my 87 FJ's alternator gave up the ghost and I ordered a replacement from Napa. When I picked it up I noticed that it looked different so I told the counter guy and he said no problem just bring it back if it doesn't work.

Got home and two major differences- the plug on my FJ is a two wire and the napa alternator is a 3 spade socket. Second difference is the regulator is not present on the outside of the Napa alternator. I've read through a few threads and see that someone makes an adapter for the 3fe alternator but I'm not sure that is what I have. Napa can't get me the correct alternator and I've checked the usual places and all are out of stock.

Question is can I make a jumper in order to use the alternator I have from Napa? The terminals on it are labeled E, N, and F.

The part number on the Napa alternator is 213-8212

Thanks!

get the right alternator

go back and politely tell the napa person , u got the wrong part

I’ve talked to the counter person at Napa and they have no problem taking it back.
The problem is they can’t source the correct one and no one else that I’ve looked at ( rock auto, other parts stores, etc. ) can either.

What I think I know is that the alt for the 62 is no longer available. I've had mine rebuilt several times. It's buried and likely gets little air....probably gets too hot. I can't seem to keep one working.

I suspect similar for the 60. Good luck finding a new one.

Take your original to a shop and have it rebuilt. Then it will last another 30 years. Auto store alternators can be junk.

This the best solution if you have the time to let them rebuild, way better than auto parts junk.

Thankfully Willard has hooked me up with a reman'd alternator. I'll rebuild mine and keep it as a spare.

Thanks Willard!

First link is for a three spade connector. Rock Auto has the correct one listed but when I add it to the cart I get a message saying item is being removed from your cart, out of stock.

Posting to enlighten those with alt problems in the future:

My alt quit on me last night, and I've spent the morning trying to locate one as I've planned to head out to Big Bend Natl Park in the old girl on Saturday.

1st stop: the usual dealers in Chineseum (O'reilly's, Advance, etc.) but they either can't get one or it's a special order. Then, RockAuto gave me the same song and dance it gave JohnQ. And for further frustration, the local rebuild shops were going to have to order the parts in, and then it would be a day to get it turned around. What's the deal?!...it's a frigging '80-something Toyota alternator, I figured these internals would just be lying around places by now. Oh well, at least they were all surprised by the difficulty, too.

Ended up ordering the rebuild bits and pieces from RockAuto. Oddly enough they say they can turn that around pretty quickly. Here's to hoping .

Nope. Put the one that you get rebuilt for a good local rebuilder in and keep the reman as a spare.
