needed a catchy title to grab some attention ....

I'm working on my 73 fj40 alternator F to 2F location swap

I'll be putting together a CS130 one wire for the install.

right now I have the JT PS kit and once I do this id imagine i would have to switch to "the dorry style" by orange to enable belt tensioning? if im correct

in order to run two belts...

inside groove (PS pump, WP and Crank)

outside groove ( new 2f ALT location, WP and crank)

I would have to run the same size pulley on both alternator and PS pump correct ?? or is the Saginaw style large narrow pulley good to go?

or is their an easier belt configure... I'd like to have Water pump redundancy like on my 80 series

will toyota belts work? F motor belt inside and 2F belt outside groove ? or just measure and hit the parts store ?

if anyone can clear the air I would appreciate it before I start tearing into this

You can have pulleys made. They are not that expensive. A good hydraulic repair shop can get blank pulleys the diameter you need and the belt width you want. They get the center that fits your shaft diameter and they weld the two together on a lathe. It all comes out square and you can continue using those cool wide belts that came on the Land Cruisers from the factory.

ive always put the toyota pulley on the gm alternator otherwise never had any of these problems before and used the stock pump pulley and a toyota 2 groove balancer

alright sounds good. I'm just trying to figure this all out on paper and work out any potential future issues before I get hands on. I wasn't sure if running two different diameter pulleys would create and issue. (toyota pulley on ALT and the larger Saginaw pulley on the PS pump)

this is what I'm working with.

Saginaw pump with large pulley and stock F alternator. all running on the inside groove

the last pic is just a mock mount of the new 2F bracket and just an old F alt to check clearances

iv ordered a new By pass hose. the PO looks like he made his own. ( iv found a lot of s***ty shortcuts)

Larger PS pump pulley and smaller alternator pulley is normal for both Toyota and Chev vehicles. Width is all I'd be even remotely worried about.

Somebody [it might have been southbostonfj] told me the 2F alt bracket holds the alt pulley too far forward to work with that 73-74 wp pulley and HB. I've always used the 2F wp pulley and balancer when I do PS conversions, so I just don't know.

Pop a pulley on that alt and snap a pic for us that shows the orientation with both of your stock pulleys.

Best

For my set up, I couldn't use the wide/skinny pulleys however, I had an oddball situation. My 2F had an F water pump and that caused the misalignment issues. I swapped in the correct WP and bought all wide groove pulleys and everything worked out.

Hello, I am working on a '77 40 and need the wide/skinny pulley configuration as shown in your post here. Would appreciate identifying a source for me on this part?

Thanks
Matthew

Wide/skinny is an oddball I believe and only used in the 1973 time frame. 1977 would have two wide groove pulleys. If it were my truck, I would source the correct era parts to avoid belt alignment issues.

Having a '77 FJ40 and just replaced the water pump and installed two wide belts, I went and look at the pulley on my PS pump. Looks like when I had the PS installed, they used what appears to be an OEM two groove fan pulley on a backing plate/spacer attached to the PS Sag pump shaft. Not sure where this came from, but with my set up, I'm able to run a wide belt. :)
