So i am looking for any differing opinions here. my 89 FJ62 has done this weird thing where after i drove it about 20 mins to work, stopped (turned off) and then like 5 minutes later i start it again and the battery, brake and AT temp lights come on. I turn it off and on again and all is well. So today it doesn't work i turn it off and on again no luck. I went to go home before the battery died and about 5 miles in the volt meter goes back up and all is well. So i am thinking alternator is dying. Anybody got a different diagnosis?

Well i replaced the alternator and still have an issue, at idle if i turn everything on (lights, hazards, heater, radio, wiper's, windows) the volt meter drops to zero, i dont even know where to start looking. Any one got any idea's.

Which volt meter? The one in the dash? If so, get a digital hand held volt meter and connect it to the + & - studs on the battery- then do your test again.
At idle, some voltage drop is normal if every accessory is turned on. But not below 12V or so.

yeah the one in the dash, i checked it as you suggested and was fairly stable at the battery (at 14.1 to 14.3) and very stable coming out the back of the Alt (14.5). so my the gauge tells a different story but it looks like all is well according to my volt meter. my headlights dont seem to pulse with the hazard lights but the dash lights do, thinking maybe an issue hidden in the dash somewhere.
