Mudders,

Just pulled the non functional alternator off my 2006 Hundy assuming is was time for brushes. (120K miles, original part)

The question I have is in the armature area of the alternator.

The brush assembly would not lift off because the lower brush was riding in a fairly deep groove.

Is this groove excessive wear or are they designed this way?

(I’m assuming excessive wear and have a rebuilt alternator coming in but would rather just put brushes in this one…)

It’s a nicely machined grooved with a bevel lead in… The bevel makes me think it could be factory as the outside of the brush is still sharp.

Thoughts??!

It is worn. Should look like the other. 120K miles? I cannot believe it. Mine is at 250K mines and it looks like the top contact point on your alternator. I have several toyotas and non even at 280K moles show that much of wear. I replace only the brushes with an oem kit.

If you take the commutstor to a machine shop, they should be able to insert a new sleeve for it. Basically both will get new sleeves.

I agree with @nissanh - that is very worn. Mine did not look like that when I rebuilt the alternator.
