My son and I(novices at this) are trying to replace power steering pump but are already stuck. We can‘e get the belt off, we have loosened bolts on the alternator and a few around the power steering pump. We are obviously missing something!

I have searched all over the forum, and help is appreciated!!

The alternator has a pivot bolt at the bottom. Loosen it a tad to let the alternator pivot freely.
Normally, when the alternator is relaxed from its tensioners, there's plenty of room to slip in a belt - with plenty of room to spare

you can remove the pulley on the front of the Power steering pump to make it a bit easier. Don't lose the woodruff key (the little D shaped piece of metal that ensures the pulley doesn't slip on the pump's shaft)

Thank guys, Is the pivot bolt in the picture I attached, also does the power steering pump have a pivot bolt?

The pivot bolt is at the 6 oclock position...bottom of the alternator and has a nut on the back. You'll need to wrenches to break it loose. No pivot bolt on the p.s. pump and I wouldn't advise loosening the pulley while the belt is still under tension.

Thanks I got belt off, now can’t listen pulley bolt! I’m close but about to get towed to the shop, really appreciate feed back.

Don’t spend any money having the shop loosen the pivot bolt. Simple and quick job.

Get 2 wrenches of the proper size & from your picture it should immediately loosen. You’re not showing any rust or rounded nuts.

Don’t use an open end wrench. Use a boxed end and preferably a 6 point wrench. Or a 6 point socket and a breaker bar if necessary. 30 second job.

Good luck.

i may be missing something here , But mark clearly states in Post #1 he has loosened ALL the alternator Bolts , & also has Highlighted in RED ink , the lower Pivot Bolt & nut set up ?

- i think the real issue at hand is That is NOT a NipponDenso Alternator of any kind ?

it looks very GM to me ?

the Pully us also oversized in diameter it appears too ,

either a wrong size belt or not a correct pulley groove profile ?

hence of NOT a OEM Alternator then the Unit Body Will Bottom Out on the side of the block or a hose etc ,.....

there is NO IC type regulator Box 27700-38100 regulator assy

so this is why he is fighting it so much

in my opinion ..................

just my :

I'll second this. Getting it towed for this would be an expensive solution here.

Where are you stuck at this point? Pulley bolt on PS pump won't come off?

No matter who made the. alt., he still needs to loosen the pivot bolt. And that belt is indeed not the correct size, can’t imagine how that belt even got on there.

Once he gets this belt off, he should go to auto parts store and get one that is 2 inches longer.

Thanks to all! So I completely took the alternator off and was able to get the belt off. Getting a longer belt makes total sense so I just need to figure that out what size belt to purxhase. With the world in chaos it’s the little things like fixing up a classic FJ that bring some joy!

Any decent parts store will have a belt measuring "tool". Just get a belt that is an inch or two longer than the one you have.

Mark...

hey mark ,

good job getting that PO b/s off ! :)

instead of guessing here like the PO did or winging it with a arbitrary # of 2"

longer belt that might or might not fit again ?

i suggest another path :

- the Current OEM TOYOTA part # is 99343-11570-77 for a FJ60 P/S Drive Belt

- i used My 1990 Dealership Parts Dept. Fast Moving Paper parts Cataloger
specifically because i wanted to know and use the Oldest original correct TOYOTA Part # possible in case there is or was a part #'s suppression , that
could and does produce misleading needed parts research results often ...

- this fact is a topic for another stand alone thread......

- NOTE : I posted Below the Entire Land Cruiser Alternator & Fan , Power Steering , A/C and Air Pump Drive Belts Part# Application chart's information from 1/1961 - 8/1990 FJ40, FJ55 , FJ60, FJ62

This is
Solid Tech Spec. Data all fellow Members can use as a future research
Tool for Needed Repairs involving
every single Land Cruiser Drive Belt Original base line Part# ever made and used during these production Dates Range's ................

So, Print those pages out and save them in you Print Media Land Cruiser 3-Ring Binders / Folders etc ........... :)

- now back to mark :wrench:

- This is a Good Current and available USA dealership / parts PDC stocking #

- see if your local Dealer can get you the correct TOYOTA OEM part for the Job ?

- if Not or it will back order a few days , like some Land Cruiser dedicated part#'s do often ..........

- then call your Local NAPA , or ADVANCE AUTO , Or other major AUTO parts Chain that Sells In-Stock The Drive Belt Brand " BANDO " .

- BANDO ,
is the OEM Toyota Drive Belt parts maker for the 99343-11570-77 the dealership sells you ......fyi

- The Last 4
Primary Digits of a TOYOTA Land Cruiser FJ60 OEM TOYOTA Drive Belt are it's Length / Diameter Size spec's .........

- so : 99343-1
1570-77 = 1570mm , this translates into You very simply need
a 1570mm millimeter BANDO size spec.
Cogged type Drive belt ......

- TOYOTA Drive Belt part# size spec's have a stated Tolerance in the Microfiche
of 5mm max -out , this means in English they can run up to or below the part# size spec's possibly 5mm or less either way long or short , i have NEVER
been screwed by a 5mm possible variation on any
TOYOTA or BANDO Parts maker Drive belt in my life , so its a NON-Issue , except when u double verify the BANDO Belt Brand part # size spec. VS the last 4 primary #,s of the TOYOTA part# i will better explain below ......;

- also if u have a Southern States Farm Supply Store near you , they as a chain
are all Authorized
BANDO Drive belt Distributors / Dealers nation wide , farm tractors , lawn mowers , etc , most use Cogged Drive belts same as a FJ60 , does 2F Engine

- I have had Much success sourcing various Vintage Toyota
Cogged BANDO Drive Belts at My Local " Bowens Farm Supply store " , who are a SS / Southern States owned Chain type store .

- i simply went to
BANDO.com , and in under 60 seconds identified the correct
BABDO part# , and also Double Verified the Size / Length Spec. of the Toyota
Primary Part# last 4 Digits Identification method i outlined for you above ....

- Your
BANDO OEM parts Maker Brand Belt part # 5610

- your
5610 Belt is the same size spec. as the 99343-11570-77 ...........

- now u have 2 options on the table to obtain the same exact correct part for
the job , you know is made to fit your FJ60 Alternator and Power Steering application set up ...........

-, here are the resources and images i saved for your job scope at hand ......

good luck :)

FYI..."FJ" is reference to an FJ Cruiser. This may have some negative connotation for an owner of a classic Cruiser..ie 40 series, 60 series etc. "Fixing up my FJ60" or "fixing up my 60" would be more appropriate. End of rant.

After you get done working with the belt drive setup on a 60 series, the term FJ may take on a whole new meaning - if you get my drift.

Hey @ToyotaMatt, are the Bando PN’s for all 3 belts listed in this photo?

for a FJ60
Or

A FJ62 ?

I stock ALL the Various Kits for each applocation

please see below links .

fyi these are the commercial COGGED OEM type same as your dealership sells

i personally run these and have nothing but LOVE for my New Company Mascot , the BLACK Squirrel , i named him BANDO the Back Squirrel this past holidays .........

no joke ...
