I appreciate those who are willing to share their build costs, it shows what it really takes to get to certain levels of build.

This actually helps me out. Let's me know how much of a pay raise I need to ask for when its time, or find a job to give me the pay raise so that I can continue building mine. Since it's new and still prioritizing which mods to do, the pricing helps organize the list as well.

Hah! That's not necessarily a bad perspective. If one wants something bad enough, they'll find a way. Motivation to achieve higher, better, whatever. So long as one is not fiscally irresponsible. Much rather that than be complacent and go no where because they have no dreams.

I like chasing bigger and better. Managed to get myself a 200 a good 6-10yrs before I thought I'd own one.
But this helps put pricing, mods, and opinions in one place instead of reading all these different build threads and comparing and contrasting that way.
Everyone here with their amazing build threads makes me envious and look at my bank account/credit limit and contemplate my choices hahaha

I suppose there is a cynical interpretation here. Potentially around a bunch of people of means spending as much as a Miata on a ratio change. Wasn’t thinking of going down that particular rabbit hole.

How are you going to get that Miata through any of these completely unnecessary trails, man?!?

I would guess I have ~25k into my 200 over the years. I would say 50/50 parts/labor. My favorite mod is the on-board air compressor, I use that thing all the time.

I will never be "done".

I owned my last truck for 16 years, touched every single nut and bolt, total rebuild. I still wasn't done when I finally sold it.

My 2 favorite mods SO FAR are the ARB drawers and the SmartTap turn signal flasher. But I have a long list.
What is Smart Tap...sounds interesting?

It's sad but my favorite mod are these:

Amazon product ASIN B00EVMT6A8

I'll second that, especially on the per dollar basis. Absolutely a must have, with or without BSM.

I tested several brands of 3.75" mirrors and found the "Grote" brand to have the best clarity and field of view of any of them. It's Amazon item # B000CMJ0Z2.

lots$$$
Best mod:
for the 200 it no question - 4.88's / lockers
for the 80 probably going to be the Turbo once @NLXTACY ships me mine

Nice trucks! It is interesting to see so many people list 4.88 as one of the best mods. My 2016 is currently stock, but even with power button it is relatively sluggish off the line. Are people putting 4.88 specifically because they move up to 33" tire or higher? Or are you doing it because of the sluggish symptom I am referring to...?

Got my 200 for almost a year. Right away I knew I needed a set of AT tires and suspension for off roading and hitting up some beautiful trails that I’ve planned to hit.

So my favorite upgrades are wheels, toyo at3, and 2 inch lift. Before I got the tires it was nerve wrecking taking the lc stock off roading. A lot of sharp rocks and needed better grip.

Bilstein suspension, Michelin tires, slee formed sliders, SDHQ hidden winch mount (warn winch still backordered), LRA backordered.

It adds up but i love this truck and it still looks stock to any non-enthusiast which I like.

Unfortunately the daily driving duties have been turned over to my wife since we just downsized to 2 vehicles while the price of used vehicles is so high.

I put in the 4.88s as a preemptive treatment for:
35" tires - heavier by 40 lb a corner
More weight - drawers, recovery gear, armor, it all adds up quick
Less aero - awnings, racks, etc
I run with five passengers pretty often.
All that stuff was coming, and I didn't want to lose performance a little bit on each one and wake up one day hating the truck.
As a bonus, gears are used all the time, every second, and they make the truck feel light and sprightly.
true story: Yesterday there was a 'hot hatch' (no muffler, lots of extra paint and ground effects, audi S wagon) at the light ahead of me. You could hear their BOV, so it was built in some fashion, and they for sure had no muffler (I had to switch to recirculate / air clean to survive behind them at the light, so much smell, anyhow) They'd been racing themselves from light to light and I thought I'll follow and see.
They light it up, and I didn't even have to stay full on the gas to keep up.
Gears - get street race cred.

The 200 was the best mod I ever bought for the 80 :flipoff2: Now the 80 sits indoors, gets all the maintenance it wants at a leisurely pace and gets rubbed with a diaper while the 200 sits out in the driveway, goes on home depot trips and pulls the camper.

Plans for the 200 include 35's on AHC and probably the dissent LX bumper because it looks so good. Might leave it at that. If I ever get rid of the 80, or just decide to wheel the 200 more, then F/R lockers and 4.88 would become part of the plan.

thanks man. you pretty much nailed it. I went with the 4.88 for more gear and pep. Ran on stock gearing with 35's for a year or two then switched to 4.88...twas a blessing
good luck

Lucky you, the 2016s already have comparable gearing. 4.88s are for 6-speeds. 2016+ already have a comparable first gear, with a much wider spread of gears, ready for 35s. At most, a really heavily built 8-speed may want 3.9s.

Arguable but IMO, 4.3s are a better choice for a daily driver/overlander, with a better balance of torque and efficiency. 4.88s perhaps for a dedicated and heavily built off-roader. Often misunderstood, gearing only helps get off the line with increased wheel torque. Once at speed, it's all HP, which gearing won't do much for.

Since I am about to inherit her 2016, I want to build it thoughtfully, because I already have a 5.3 swapped 62 that is running 35 inch tires and armor

The 2016 will almost certainly be a stealth build. Or, at least I’m going to try to keep it that way for as long as possible!
