...and all I thought he did was fly on planes to random, uninteresting locales nationwide and sit around in front of computers and "be an engineer."

Lo and behold, I roll into Danville Saturday evening and I get a tour of one of the coolest plants I've ever been in....of course, they (will soon) make sheet rock....

Thanks for dinner Ash! Your stuff is safe and sound back at the Ali residence.

Cheers.

Glad to hear you made it back safe then Onur.

Ali--that's too many wires. Please eliminate 7. Doesn't matter which ones. I'm sure your coworkers would appreciate it if you left it a surprise.

Looks like you have had some decently good weather there too.

Gosh, that's a handsome devil :D

Good seeing Onur in the East Coast of all places and thanks for hauling my crap home for me.

I've got pictures of me standing in front of stuff I have nothing to do with also.:flipoff2:

I have hard hats I can loan out if anybody wants one.

wow. what a rat's nest. you should be ashamed Ali.

It is a mess but since we're in a middle of a startup, I'm constantly inside the panels pulling wires out for troubleshooting purposes. I gotta find a union IBEW dude to make the panel "pretty" once we're done ;)

In the background is the coal burning power plant whose byproduct is synthetic gypsum, which just happens to be the main raw material for making Sheetrock!

Very cool. Is it still white? Will the wallboard plant make all its product from the synthetic gypsum from the power plant or just augment some natural gypsum ore? If you don't have to use any natural ore then that would save by not having to use crushers. Does the synthetic gypsum still have to go through a calcining mill to drive out moisture or is it dry enough to go right in to the slurry? (I worked a summer internship at the two American Gypsum plants in the ABQ area)

Marc,

Is it still white?
> no, sorta brown. It comes out rather wet and sorta slurry like from the power plant. It'd be interesting to see the scrubbing process.

>100% syn gyp from the power plant.

> yup, it's still must go through one level of crushing (Williams mill) and drying and then a second level of calcining mill using a kettle.

I took Onur through the Mill all the way to the top. The mill building is five stories tall. This plant will produce sheetrock at 600 fpm. Pretty impressive.

The housing market will recover just as soon as we all pony up our $3,000 PER PERSON to bail out the rich people on Wall Street who screwed it all up in the first place... We shoulda just made them renegotiate the interest rates with the people they gave all those subprime loans to...

At the risk of a derail ...

Why are those of us who pay our mortgage and live within our means bailing out big bankers and other who can't?

'Cause we vote Republicrat.

Means lots of cheap 80's out there. :meh:

I've been wondering the same thing. I didn't get one of them new-fangled, buy twice the house you can afford, rates won't go up that fast types of loans. No, I wasn't willing to take the risk. I just got a plain old conventional fixed-rate mortgage and I'll be paying the same mortgage payment (well, P&I) for the next 37 billion years.

Lucky me! I have 2 of those conventional home loans now. Thanks to all those who can't afford what they wanted, I couldn't sell my ABQ house.

At least I was able to get the second in light of the mayhem recently. Total pain in the ass and I feel violated for the checks and rechecks of my history but in the end they gave it to us. Good luck to those who have blemishes on their records.

Ouch. Is your ABQ home still vacant or are you renting it?

Sorry for the hijack Ali/Onur but your thread is probably dead anyway. How much more can you talk about a gypsum wallboard plant anyway. :flipoff2:
