OK, so I recently got a 2002 LX470 and everything under the hood sounded fine. About a week later, I had the timing belt and water pump replaced. First drive, I notice an intermittent whine when accelerating from a stop. Now that the weather has warmed up, it's getting worse. Sort of a "waaaaaaAAAAAA..." then it stops at around 2300 RPM as though it "catches" and then runs as normal with nice cold air. In the last couple days, it has also started whining constantly at freeway speeds while the AC is engaged, but stops as soon as I turn the AC off. It's the compressor, no doubt. When the compressor is engaged at idle, it pumps quietly (no rumbling or squeaking), just the whine before it "catches". So, my question is could the timing belt change have goofed something up with the AC clutch? It seems to whine more when the weather is warm (more stress on the pulley/clutch?)

No, nothing about a timing belt change would relate to the A/C compressor. Check the air gap of the Magnetic Clutch...if it is slipping it can create the noise you describe.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's just that. It seemed odd that it started the day after they changed the timing belt. Thought maybe they had futzed around and had gotten it out of whack.

It does sound like they did something on the timing belt job. Check the compressor bolts to make sure that they tightened them, about 35 ft lbs as I recall. The two front compressor bolts go into the end of the fan bracket. It would be pretty easy to start them and then forget to torque them down.

Long shot, yet before changing the clutch, I would jump 12volts directly into the clutch wiring plug.

If it engages solidly, maybe the problem is with the wiring.

I'll check that. Thanks.
