Do most of the P/S conversions out there require removal of stock air cleaner can and related hardware?

That said, if you're in a non-smog state with a pre-PS motor, the easiest setup is to run the pump on the lower left [driver's] side of the engine, with the alternator up top on the passenger side. This configuration should NOT interefere with either type of air cleaner .
