My heater is shot and since I am not concerned with keeping it stock I am thinking about ordering a aftermarket heater from summit. This would also free up some needed space under the hood as I could take the heater blower assembly out and sell it. My question is the Summit heater is rated at 28,000 BTU and 260 CFM so I was curious what the rating is on a stock heater in a 1972 FJ40 so I would know how they compare?

Stock Heater BTU

I hate to bump my own post but I am sure someone on here knows the how many BTU/CFM a stock heater puts out in a 70's FJ40? Any way it was worth one more shot.

Thanks

I cannot tell you the exact BTU/CFM but I know when the ones in my cruisers quit or are not putting out enough heat I use the Majove heater I think it is made by Flex a lite. I have never compared it to a "new" stock one but I know it works better than any I have had in my cruisers. I think they go for 159.00 right now.

I haven't run a stock heater with a stock motor either all mine have been V-8 or 3RZ.

do you have a rear-bed heater?
a buddy is running his stock rear heater in the front...no defrost, but he seems pretty pleased.

Heater

The stock rear heater was removed by the PO. I am in the putting a fuel cell and covered/locked storage are behind the seats where the rear heater would have been. I'm not to worried about having the defrost as I only drive it with a bikini top so if it's cold enough for my windows to frost up it's parked in the shop. Good to hear that the Mojave heaters work so well. I will take a look at them also.

Heater

If i was going to restore my FJ40 to stock I would probably buy yours since they look really nice but since I can gain the space I need under the hood by going with a aftermarket self contained heater that will fit in the same space as a stock heater under the dash and buy it new for $134.00 compared to a restored one for $425.00 after which I still would have a 35 year old blower unit that could need replaced any time the aftermarket one looks pretty good. Even though I never found out the ouput of a factory unit compared to the aftermarket one the couple of people that did contact me were happy with the aftermarket heaters so I am assuming they are comparable or better in the amount of heat they put out. I am going to have a stock heater that needs restored and a stock blower unit that works for sale soon if you buy them to restore.

That heater works great!! I have the same one and I installed it under the dash on the passenger side. It works in conjunction with the stock heater. It puts out a tremendous amount of heat and after just a few minutes you will have to turn it off!

after market heater

I did this and wasn't not happy with it at all. For one, they are very loud (fan) and didn't give as much heat as the factory unit seemed to give me. Also, setting up the defroster was difficult as on my 72 FJ40 you need two outs for the left and right side defrost vents. The unit I purchased only had one. Rigging a work around never really worked.

Worst Mod I ever did and would strongly recommend finding a used factory unit.

My current rig uses the rear unit mounted on the fire wall to give heat to the cab (Previous Owner) and I will be putting the original back in once I figure how to work around the trans shifter (SM420). The rear unit method does not give you the window defroster option.

Good luck.
