Ok, so everyone's been here before. The last day of getting your 40 up and running in tip top shape before a trip. OBX in my case. Front axle rebuilt, check. New brakes all around, check. New exhaust, check. New Master cylinder, check.

Water pump, uncheck, ... leaking only so slightly...

Temperature gauge has been on the hot side the last few times I've driven it, was going to flush the old coolant out, and put new in.

So, to quote Th Clash. Should I stay, or should I go?

Pick up a new water pump, and carry it with you, if you go anywhere. Once they start to leak, they don't last long.

I did about 30,000+ km on a noisy water pump. It wasn't leaking yet but I changed it since I was doing the rad anyways. A leaky water pump is a royal pain and if you hit the hills it can cause serious headaches as you pretty well will always leak fluid. I'd take the 4 hours or so and just do it.

Hi All:

I swapped-out a noisy water pump last June right before a weekend trail run - it was not that difficult to do, and the "peace of mind" was great.

Regards,

Alan
