Looking at buying a used 40 series while stationed in Europe, I have seen a couple that looked good in Italy. Any advice? Here are a couple videos and pics.

I will try and upload some more pics after I get off of work.

Rust is by far the biggest factor. Followed by unmolested OR proof that the mods that were done were done well. Power steering is a must for me too, but you can add that. Your videos aren’t showing up btw. Good luck!

I would look a few years newer for a BJ42. 83/84 will most likely have a H55F five speed. Would also look for a BJ46. Down side is finding a mid wheel base BJ46 with a hard top will be hard.

The BJ40 your looking at has a mix match of door arm rests. Neither of which are original. Because it has a factory hard top do not think it was a kit but rather a complete vehicle when shipped from Japan. Seen different arm rests in South American but think those were kits which could explain why not the grab handles used from the factory. Assuming can get Uncle Sam to ship it to the states for you. If I had that option would choose carefully what I bought. Future resell would be better on 8/80+ with a 3B. I assume Italy did get the BJ42 and BJ46? I know Portugal and possibly Spain got the BJ40 after 8/80 but those were less equipped than the 8/80+ BJ42. In some markets the FJ40 had a three speed until the 83 model. The market is getting flooded with SA 4X series that were less equipped. Seems it starting to matter if it is a original US import or imported later from another market. Shipping free my Uncle Sam or paying for it will be the same for any short wheel base. Would buy one with the best resale later. Like mentioned rust would be the biggest concern. Unless you know the 40 series a fancy new paint job can hide many issues. By how the engine looks and paint on the screws for the windshield can see this one been restored.

I have also been looking at this one.

I found this offer on AutoScout24.

Guessing Europe A/C was not a big option. Doesn't say if it has power steering which would be nice. Doesn't look bad but again with only a few pictures who knows. Would be nice if it had the original factory spoke wheels if that what was imported to Italy? Those are not original. Could of had split rims. Don't know that market, just know those aren't original rims. I would check on any import regulations. Believe in the military can claim any state as avoid diesel restrictions like seeing in California. Unless you plan on making a career in the military would think where you might end up and check their rules. Also would consider those could change. Would think nobody would care on a vehicle over thirty five years old but that not the case. At least they are all over twenty five years old and out of the gray market vehicle range.
