Hi Just wondering if any one could give me some advice regarding a RJ77 that I have been looking at. It is a 92 former UN vehicle but in good shape with 117000km. THe engine is a 22R and I am not familar with it as I only ever had an FJ62.

Are there any known issues with this engine that I should know about before buying it?

Thanks

The 22R is a 2.4 litre chain driven single overhead cam inline four - typically found in the mini trucks from 1980ish through to sometime in the 90's, also used in some of the RWD cars of the early 80's..

Relatively big and low powered, with a rep for lasting - I've heard gossip that it was based on a design used in forklifts.. I'd recommend checking out the Toyoya mini-truck guys for more info.

The R series of engines started way back in 1953 and there are more than a dozen variations used in all types of toyota cars, buses, trucks, 4x4 and almost definately forklifts.
The 22R was the last in the evolution. I had a 5R in a toyota dyna 2ton and it could do 80 mph but was woeful on a steep hill:D
There is nothing inherently wrong with them in fact they are quite reliable.

However you wont be getting any sparkling performance in a 77 series body.

The carburettors are reknown for being problematic,I dont remember the exact cause but they are an easy fix.

I believe the 2LT diesel fits into these without much fuss.

Thanks, I will check out the mini truck section. Yes when I test drove it the car did not have bags of power compared to the 62 but as most of our driving is on bad or nonexistant roads high speed would not be a problem. It only has a four speed too I think called the G40 but as the price is right I think I will try and make the deal.
