I've read through many threads here and elsewhere and have pretty much narrowed my choices down to Dynamat Xtreme or Damplifier Pro, so would like to narrow the discussion down to people who have used either. I did use Dynamat Xtreme on one door a couple of months ago, it seemed to do fine and was very easy to work with. I've read that the Damplifier Pro has slightly thicker aluminum and maybe uses a ? heavier bodied butyl rubber than the Xtreme however. But to complicate things I just discovered Dynapad, anyone have experience using that? Apparently the Dynapad is a sheet of heavy vinyl with closed cell foam on the top and bottom. You just lay it down on the floor under the carpet and cut around obstructions, one advantage might be that it's not stuck down permanently.

I lined the roof of my FJ55 w the Dynamat Extreme, love it! 36"s, gears, flowmaster... still able to talk on the phone on the freeway. I'll be lining my 80 with it before too long. Aaron

I used both Dynamat Extreme and Damplifier on my 55 and used S Skin Ceramic Coating and then shot S Skin Sound Deadener it was super quiet and the floor did not get hot.. The Damplifier does have a thicker foil but both are great products. Don't waste your money on the Dyna Pad... It's to thick ..almost 1/2 inches and you'll run into fitment problems with the carpet and its not peel and stick... I did buy it for the 55 ... was going to use it on top of all the other coatings and ended up not using it .. The Dynaliner on the other hand is really nice and comes in different thickness and it's peel and stick... I used Dynamat on my 80 and covered it with Dynaliner...when I ran out of Dynamat I ordered Rattle Trap Extreme it's a FatMat product ito finish the 80 and for the money you can't beat it... I paid $172.00 for 100 sq ft of 80 mil... Your on the right path to a quiet 80 and all thee products do a great job.. lots of great deals on Amazon and EBay.. If you check both my builds you see lots of pictures of the details...

dynamat and damplifier are sound damping materials. Sound damping materials are designed to eliminate structure borne noise. Luxury Liner (Second Skin Automotive) and Dyna Pad are sound barriers. They are designed to stop noise transmission.

Ant sold second skin audio, but he is working with them on his new product.

I used damplifier pro on my 80 and I did use the dynapad it isn't self adhesive and requires the use of spray adhesive, it is a huge pain in the ass and was a lot of work to make it fight right around the seat latches etc.

Listen to Lou, he has it down, do a foil constrained baselayer, then either a coating and a thin foam layer or just a thin foam layer. My LX is very quiet but it just allows you to hear other noises, like now I have a rattle in my soonroof that the rest of the truck was noisey enough to hide before. ha!

Good luck it is quite a bit of work but worth it.

so which would be ideal for the tailgate? the rattle trap by itself or a combo of something?

Weirdbeard,

If I were you I would check out the Tailgate storage mod, it gives you some nice storage space and allows you to line the inside of the tailgate. On the tailgate I justed used the foil backed sound deadener.

If you are just going to do the top of the tailgate, I would be concerned about having the carpet fit oddly if you added too much thickness.

i have a wagongear tailgate lid, i haven't installed it yet, so yes it will be the interior of the tailgate. Whatever route i go with will be throughout the majority of the rig. I'm just not gutting the whole thing at once, not enough time. I guess i will go with the rattle trap first and if its not quiet enough i can add the dynaliner.

I removed the factory asphalt sound deadening and put down one layer of Damplifier Pro on the floor and inside the doors/walls of my 80. I then put down a layer of Luxury Liner Pro. The interior noise has dropped significantly compared to before. Also, the amount of heat transmitted up through the floor has been cut. In fact, I removed the OEM cat heat shields and installed a layer of Damplifier Pro on the bottom side of the floor and put the heat shields back up. Passenger side floor is now cooler than the driver's.

If I had to it do again, (which I probably will in the :princess:'s) I would go with the Damplifier Pro and follow up with Spectrum Sludge and Luxury Liner Pro. HTH

gotmud: was wondering how the Damplifier Pro handles being stepped on along with the heat around the transmission tunnel and cats??

I am currently in the process of restoring my interior, and I am using Megamat from Fatmat. It's made with butyl and I'm pretty pleased with it. It was $239 for 100 s.f. including shipping and tools. If you also want to go the extra step, you can order the MLV padding from here. TotalMass Mass Loaded Vinyl MLV 1 lb per square foot 4’ x 25’ I think they have the best price around. Will cost you $50 for shipping because it is extremely heavy. When they say 1 lb/s.f. they were not joking.
