Adjustable Extended Rear Sway Bar Links

I've been meaning to make extended sway bar links for the rear of my '62 for years. I figured as long as I was at it I might as well make them adjustable. I'm running OME medium rears with a leaf removed and air bags so I really don't know how much over stock I am.

I took some new links and cut them apart. The tubing is 1/4" DOM and the bolts are 10mmx1.5 10.9 grade. 1/4" DOM not because of strength, only because it had the right ID for tapping 10mmx1.5 threads (I was too lazy to be bothered to have to drill it to size when I could buy a size that was ready to go).

Completely collapsed they are about 2" longer than stock. In the pics I've got them set at 2.5" longer than stock. I'll probably try them at 3" longer than stock as well.

What HTP? Nice fix.

Now that I've taken it for a couple of drives on the highway I can definitely tell a difference. Not huge but when taking long highway speed corners, like on/off ramps, the rear doesn't roll out as much. I keep my back springs pretty soft (OME medium minus one leaf and minimal air in the air bags) so getting the rear bar back to somewhere around stock height paid off.

Sway bar install help for an '84 FJ60

I picked up an FJ62 sway bar to put on my 84 '60, to help out the body roll that I have with my OME suspension. Problem is that the '84 doesn't have the tapped holes in the frame or the sway bar mounts on the axle. Can anyone post a pic of the stock FJ62 sway bar installation so I can fab something up??!! thanks -

RL

is the idea to have the "arm" of the sway bar parallel with the ground. I'm about to do a OME heavy / heavy and alos will install a rear sway bar I got from a 62.

BTW.... Joel...what wheel and tire combination are you running and are spacers required?

Sway Bar install on a pre '85

I did this on my '82

I did fab some extended links. I did not make them adjustable, but I connected them with a quick disconnect hitch pin system.

Thanks Dynosoar for the link. I spotted those pics in the forum previously. What I'd like to see is a photo of the axle swaybar mounts, since I'll have to fab up and weld onto my '84 FJ60. Anybody?

Yeah, I think the idea is to get them parallel but I don't really know. That's really why I made them adjustable - so that I could experiment. I do know that I can tell the difference with them 2.5" longer than stock.

The wheels are Stockton Wheel Explorer 72s - 16x8 with 3.25" backspacing powder coated silver (really more of a medium dark matte gray). No spacer required, they clear my TLC4x4 "monster calipers" up front without any problem. The tires are Nitto Terra Grapplers in 265/75R16D (they measure 31.4" at 35 psi unloaded and the tread width is 10.5). This height plus 4.56 gears equal almost exactly stock gearing.

thanks for the info...good writeup... I think I may try and duplicate what you have done, looks good.
