So I ordered a full set of seatbelt planet belts and I’m having a hard time figuring out where I should drill the hole for the rear belts. Also the section that needs to be cut out for the retractor. Anyone have these belts with pictures of the install? I know there are pictures of FJ62 belts but those have different mounting holes....

All I know is that the belts should be verticals to the pivot point. What did you do on the drivers side with that wiring bundle? Seems like it’s right in the way...

Thanks!

There is more in my build thread. But let me know if you have any questions. These are OEM 62 rear retractors into an 83 FJ60.

Ill have to get you a picture. But on my BJ60 I welded on a plate at the bottom. As I felt sheetmetal was not strong enough. I used 1/4 inch plate and put bolts on it welded in. The top hole was there.
It will be a week before I can get a picture. Unless i put one on here years ago. i will look.

It’s an 84. Here is what I’m working with...My belts are new manufacture and only have one mounting hole at the bottom instead of the 2 hole V design like the FJ62 OEM belts

@4Cruisers photo reference in the above post.

Keep in mind that the top anchor is where the most force is felt and needs to be the strongest anchor point. As it is acting like a pulley when you put 100 lbs on one side you have to pull 100 lbs on the other side. Resulting in the 200lbs (aprox) felt on the pulley anchor.

What i’m Getting at is the retractor anchor isn’t designed to be bolted into overkill because it is only going to feel half of the force that the top C-Pilar feels. That said, make it stronger than you think you need for who ever going to do back there.

You can likely do what @4Cruisers did and make a bracket to bolt the retractor in position.

It looks the like 80 series belt is bolted into the thin sheet metal. No heavy duty bracket is used

I would only make a heavy bracket. I would want it attached to more than sheet metal.
I used 1/4 plate and went much wider and taller. Spread out.
200lbs, whats that ? A crash might have 6 or ten times G force, right? so a 200 lb adult may pull over 1000 lbs of pressure. Since it’s not factory I’d air on the side of over built. All liability lies with you having homemade belts.

I remember reading that in a big crash you can generate 50+ G.... (IIRC around 100G is leathal). So a 200lb adult will put 20,000lb force through the seat belt (although that is spread across 2/3 anchor points).

They say 1" of weld can support 1000kg (2200lbs) so realistically you want to have a lot of metal/strength in that area...

What do you guys use to cut the holes for the retractors so they sit flush? Multi tool, grinder, Dremel? I’ve always used a Dremel but it takes forever. Wondering if there’s a better / faster way.

I used a cut off disk. Made the hole the size I wanted. Then made a plate with two holes in it. I will get you pictures at the end of the week. My cruiser is in a shop out of town. I only work on it once a week. But my picture will help understand. I had to make custom slide panels too. I used 1/4 plywood. With a bump out around the seat belt.

The rear retractable seatbelts are what I’ve been wanting to do since last January before my motor and suspension swap. I’m confused because you guys have the 81-84 60s which Seatbelt Planet makes rear retractors for. The 85-90 60/62 had changes done that don’t allow their retractors to work. Steve at Seatbelt Planet made it sound easy to install for an 81-84 60 but difficult on the later models. I have a 7/85 60 and really would like rear retractors. When my SOA is finished this is my next project.

I actually found a set of OEM FJ62 Rear belts in great shape so I’ll be returning my seatbelt planet ones. I don’t like the single mounting hole and the dark brown color is more maroon than brown. Drove me insane...it looks like the OEM 62 V design with two holes will work better. Here’s a picture of the webbing color. May not bother most people but to me it’s purple.

Thats the "dark brown" you ordered from seat belt planet?

For once I love that I’m color blind. Both look great.
