I found this video posted on Reno 4x4. Maybe you've seen it...if not you should.

Access Denied - Closing Our Forests.flv - YouTube

USFS: "220,000 employees; $6 billion dollar annual budget".

I think we've all witnessed plenty of the USFS's nonsensical "forest management" methods while out trying to enjoy our forests.

Maybe Ron Paul is on to something with his campaign promise to eliminate many federal agencies. Would we as a group of forest explorers be better off without the USFS?

Provokative.

Having dealt with the USFS back when Babbit was the interior secretary, I can assure you that they are necessary, but not in the way they are run currently.

Like a lot of good ideas, they have grown to gargantuan proportions and are run largely by tree hugging liberals who hate the idea that their "Pristine" wilderness has to be shared with anyone who prefers to drive rather than walk, or who makes their living utilizing the resources that nature provided us.

That has been one of my chief complaints, people making decisions on the use of land that have never been there or experienced the land. No matter whether people have been using that area for decades or not.

I hate to be cynical, however it seems that's my attitude 100% of the time when dealing with the fed.

What's worse, look at Sierra Club's money trail. They LOVE to close off huge tracts of land that ONLY their BOD (and donors I'm sure) are allowed to access. They closed off most of the southern Sierra for private recreation using the power of the federal government.

Keep your shovels sharp!

One issue we've seen in Oregon is the USFS closing down Guard Stations throughout the state. GS's were tasked with quick strike fire extinguish duties. It seems that didn't create enough buzz in the media to justify larger budgets and more power for execs, so they are now opting (by not being able to react with agility to flair ups) to let fires grow enough to make news and necessitate huge budgets to fight them.

boggles the mind
