I've got a RHD Troopy, hard to find an OEMish AC evaporator for it. Question: any reason why one could not/would not want to build a custom heater duct and put a generic evaporator & valve inside said duct? Could be made out of sheet metal or lexan...

yes it can be done. whatever you use to make the duct be sure to insulate it or it will sweat. Ive done it before on one a long time ago. Use one with an expansion valve instead of a fixed orfice if you can (Early model vw jettas had a nice system). last one I made for 40 had a old ford AR unit, mazda rotory commpressor and a toyota condensor. worked great. Check Ebay for a old under the dash unit though, it will save you alot of trouble on making one, then try to find you other parts at a junk yard. Buy a NEW reciever drier though. If you find a old unit remember it,ll be set up for r12 so you need to find a old 12 compressor. The make pretty 12 drop ins now. Youll probably need new hoses made if you go 134, the molocules are actually smaller than 12 and will pass through the hose in a short period of time(GM had a problem with this when 134 first came out).

Scott,

You also need to think about how the compressor is going to mount under the hood. It is in the normal LHD spot? I know I can get you a universal Vintage Air unit that looks like the OEM unit offered by Toyota. The style that hangs under the PS dash.

But the Troopy is RHD and thus would require plumbing on the port side, any thoughts? It's a world market vehicle and as such I can put the stock compressor in (starboard side, right?)

I'm really considering a hanging (overhead) evaporator instead.

I'm not against considering Vintage at all. My question is can it be plumbed from the port side, and honestly can that size evaporator cool the enormity of the cab of the Troopy?

You should probably look at one of these :)
