Is the AC belt gone? Not sure what else would be a drain on the vehicle if that's not there.

FWIW drove the :princess: truck for over a year with no AC (compressor imploded, likely nose cone failed) and couldn't tell a lick of difference.

Couple HP ain't even gonna be noticeable on a 6k lb vehicle.

Even on a 3FE I doubt you'll notice. The weight savings will be more noticeable than the drag of the belt.

The AC system is pretty much stand alone, so just start unbolting and pulling stuff. Start with the compressor (after you take it to a shop to have the system discharged), and go from there. Compressor, hoses, condenser.....

I've seen setups where the AC is replaced with another alternator, which can then be run to some leads for welding purposes.... :hmm:

Tualatin's pretty cool, but if you ever head south to join us for McGrew, you'll wish you had A/C. BTDT (McGrew without AC). Just sayin.....

You should be able to remove all the underhood A/C pieces, compressor, belt, condenser, drier, liquid lines and hoses, without any problems. You could elect to take the evaporator out from the dash or just put caps over the fittings at the firewall on the engine side. If the A/C hasn't been working, you won't see a performance benefit except for the small weight reduction.

Find some rubber plugs that you can shove up into the holes. Or, you can fabricate a plate, put some rubber backing on it and drill 2 holes for the bolts.

One thing I'd advise, flush the evaporator out if you are going to leave it in. Oil, freon and o2 make an acid which can cause corrosion. It's pretty easy to remove though. Maybe an hour to r&r, plus you get to clean all the nasty crap out.

Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the evap box and bolt a plate on the firewall? You'd have a great candidate vehicle for waterproofing at that point if you're into that kind of thing.

In my opinion, if you 'wheel the truck I'd convert the ac compressor to use as an air compressor. Unless the compressor itself has seized up you won't need much in the way of parts. Almost free continuous duty OBA is one of the things on my to do list for my 80. I had one on my 84 minitruck and loved it

If he wants no air at all, sure pull the whole housing out. Surely he wants to have a fan though. However he could fabricate a duct between the fan and heater housing. However, a problem I see is having the fresh air, recirculate option gone.

Gut the box and put it back in would be what I'd do, if I were to do it, which I won't.

Fix it, a/c is easy, parts are cheap.

The compressor is on its own belt. Just loosen the idle pulley and off comes the belt. Or heck, just snip the thing and save yourself the time :)
