When is this idiocy going to end?

"Ebonics, a dialect of American English that is spoken by many blacks throughout the country, was recognized as a separate language in 1996 by the Oakland school board."

"Ebonics is a different language, it's not slang as many believe,' Texeira said. "For many of these students Ebonics is their language, and it should be considered a foreign language. These students should be taught like other students who speak a foreign language.'

Do they really think this will help students to get ahead and succeed?

These students should be taught like other students who speak a foreign language.

    NO THEY SHOULDN'T

They should have to speak clearly and distinctly. IF they are too lazy to open their mouths well enough to form complete words, then they should just not talk at all.

There's your next handicap, x-ebonic speakers fall into the rank of mime

White folks falling over themselves with white guilt. Seems to me the A-A community is what killed it last time.
If they want to treat it as a seperate language, I guess I don't care. As long as we don't end up with dual labeling like Canada, eh? Probably ought to ask themselves what jobs are available to non-English speakers in the US.

DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A RACIST STATEMENT!!!!!

Go ahead and let people talk like that....Ever seen a successful business person, other than the ridiculous music industry, talk like that? We will always need people to cook freedom fries and clean the toilets at Wal-Mart. Their just righting their own ticket to minimum wage!!

We're already getting dual labeling - English and Spanish. I have to do it all the time.

I need to find an ebonics translator, I suppose...

    What about Spanglish?

We have a very large population of New Yoricans (I didn't come up with that, it's self-labeled for Puerto Ricans born in the New York area) who speak Spanglish.

I guess this means we need to start seeing Ebonics labeled "push" "pull" stickers on the doors, and need some more options at the ATM....

    WRONG

    WRONG

    RIGHT

    Absolute garbage.

One thing to remember -- public school districts boards are made up of elected officials. They're in office because they're voted in. For the most part, at least in my area, they're not the brightest of the bunch...and they have lots of power to dictate what will and will not be taught to kids.

The San Berdoo school board appears to be composed of idiots -- or at least a majority of them are idiots. Oakland too -- at least when they said the same thing.

Personally, I find it insulting -- as to state that African American kids are unable to learn proper English without the incorporation of SLANG. I hesitate to blame the teachers...in many cases, they're bound by what the school board dictates.

Are they insisting that Spanglish be recognized as a "language"?

Translation: I’m about to go to the store for some cold beer and a sandwich. You want to ride?

You forgot drug dealers and pimps! I'm a white boy from NH but I work for a mail order company and talk to people every day from all over the country, and sometimes overseas. I can understand the spanglish guys better than most of the boys from the "hood". They talk like they have marbles in their mouths as they try and communicate in their "ebonics" language. I don't consider myself to be racist, but shouldn't everyone in this country speak the same language? The spanish guys usually try really hard to communicate, but the ebonics dudes just get pissed and hang up when we can't tell what the hell they are saying.

I've got a Puerto Rican that works with me, whose accent is so bad that I have him speak spanish to me because it's easier to decipher what he's saying....
