Darn thing is off. Geez, must be well over 150lbs.... (I was wrong, it did have a port to check the anode - shame on me for not checking...)

Capped all pipes.

Now, what to do...? Tankless or not...? Decisions, decisions...

But more importantly: What can one do with an old water heater...? mmm.... Smoker? submarine...? :D

Either haul it to the scrap yard or dump unless your area has a neighborhood dumpster collection at times.

Tankless is nice, but the wait times are longer. I'm considering re-piping my hot water lines with 3/8" because of this.

I've never heard of that problem... what brands have long wait times?

the wait time people talk about usually is how long it takes for hot water to travel from the heater to the shower etc and stay hot enough because of the cold pipes on the way. Contrasting that with the fact that a hot storage tank heater will likely leak some heat into the pipes and water, keeping things warmish and therefore have less of a wait time, although at the expense of wasted energy.

FWIW, I'm baffled by the notion that these tankless heaters have to be big enough to supply several showers at the same time. Can't folks stagger showers by 5 minutes easily enough...? sheesh... I'm going with a small one if I do go that route.

bah! Real Men only take cold showers... they need to...! :D

plus it allows me to toughen up a bit the :princess:s :)

all the high end houses have tankless here.... tank water heaters are "low brow". I'm not sure how cold it gets in your area, but they work great here.

for those of you thinking about tankless, keep in mind that for the bigger tankless, it seems like you need a big gas pipe going in, like 3/4" or so I'm told, with 1/2" being too small to support the huge gas consumption.

Finding double wall stainless flue pipe may not be that trivial either. Haven't found it at the local big boxes.
