I just pulled the tranny, dismantled it and pulled the torque converter out. How yould you know if your torque converter is in good condition by just visual inspection?

nope, before i pulled down the tranny, i over heated it, burned the oil and leaked through the breather. i am planning to drill a small hole on the TC to be used as a drain so that i can clean it with kerosene, and after cleaning weld the hole again...

I'm not sure if that would be a great idea .. but anyase I don't know other way to test the TC other than the stall test ..

Maybe you can call Rodney and ask ..

I would send it out and have it cut open and new clutch put in it before reinstalling.

I'm thinking, T/C + residual kerosene + welding = kaboom. I could be wrong though. I'd get it serviced properly, myself. Especially since I know bugger all about automatic transmissions :)

i,ve stall tested it before, engine warmed up for 30 mins, brakes fully depressed, transmission in D and floored the accelerator pedal rpm went to 1900, but when i used the truck for about an hour or two of driving (mix hi-way/stop and go traffic) stall tested it, rpm will only reach 1500. that is when the truck shakes when in D at stop.

    cheers

There is one check you can do at home. Put you fingers in the opening and try to turn the stator inside. It should only go in one direction.

Outside of that, you have to take the TC to a specialist, have them cut it open in order to judge the status.

Some things that could go bad are: the clutch plate inside the TC (also known as the Lockup), and the one-way clutch, and maybe the bearings.

Here's a link to some pics of inside a TC

I've heard horror stories about Aamco. Poeple have had to take their vehicle back cause the problems continued, didn't fix the problem etc.

...got1: did you put the drive shafts 'in phase'?
