I've installed a 1HD-T engine to my HZJ77 cruiser, replacing the stock 1HZ. I've left the original A440F transmission in as it bolted right up to the 1HD-T, but it keeps failing after extended driving. I keep the vehicle under 120kph, typically around 100kph max on Freeway yet it is now leaking fluid. Any thoughts? Do I need a different transmission for the 1HD-T? Do I need a transmission cooler? Thanks for any assistance.

What is it doing that constitutes “failing”?
Fluid started leaking out of it while driving, I smelled burning oil and stopped and looked under the vehicle. I think between the bell housing, maybe from the torque converter. This happened once before and it stopped working completely on a long trip and I had to have it rebuilt and a new torque converter installed.

HDT has more torque the HZ1 , that might be the problem .
also more power , but with gear boxes , manual and automatic the killer is the torque

Perhaps a different torque converter might solve the problem?
