A seemingly rare failure on my 100 :(

Howdy y`all

Well...After putting over a 100,000 miles on my 100, I decided it was finally time to replace the ever-so-famous Timing belt and water pump on my V8.

The job was going quite smooth, in fact, I was VERY impressed with how well everything looked on the front of the engine !

The idler and tensioner pulleys still turned smooth, the water pump was smooth and clean inside (except for the small but normal coolant weep buildup), and all of the oil seals showed no signs of leaking. I replaced the T-belt and tensioner, water pump and T-stat , and the Serpentine tensioner/pulley.

I also replaced all 3 oil cooler water hoses because they were starting to bulge just a bit , and they would be a nightmare to change later (especially on the trail !).

As everything was going back together..My buddy noticed an ugly sound coming from the large Idler bracket that the fan/clutch attaches to ! When you spun it by hand, it sounded like it was full of gravel and marbles !
There was also a lot of play in the pulley that was out of the ordinary..

Here is a Pic of that mean little part

Of course no-one had it in town, so I had to order it overnight for tomorrow !

Has anyone else had this item give them trouble?...The guys at all of the dealers here had never seen a failure on this pulley before .

Fan bearing

I pondered that when doing mine, wasn't as smooth as I'd like it to be but still seemed usable so decided to take my chances and replace it later on. I'll make a point to take the serp. belt off & inspect it periodically. $191 list at the dealer -- ouch!

I am not sure what a new one feels like Donco, But maybe a little bit of "roughness" is normal ?

I was really surprised that it didnt make a noticeable amount of noise before dissasembly, maybe tension on it hid the problem...but if that thing were to seize up on me in the middle of no-where, I would be in deep s#!t ! :frown:

Thats one of the downsides to serp belts...if you lose tension on even one accessory, you lose them all !

On a lighter side...here are a few shots of the old T-belt`s condition and the water pump (note the very slight crust at the weep-hole)... That belt had a lot of life left , and I imagine so did the pump !

A close up of the self-healing and leak-sealing crust that the Genuine Toyota coolant is famous for ! :D

t-belt

Yep, looks identical to the t-belt & w/p I took off of ours at 100k. Slight coolant weeping, dried up & crusted over. Did your new w/p come with the new gasket or did you have to order it separately? The dealer tucked a new gasket in the box with my w/p and said it was included. All the on-line parts places show the gasket separate. Maybe the dealer was trying to be nice?

I'm thinking the new fan bearing better be as smooth as the brand new water pump shaft. Actually, I think most of the slop in my old fan bracket is more in the viscous fan clutch. I may replace it before summer boat towing season comes around.

I replaced the sparkplugs & PCV valve & grommet right after doing the t-belt. Dealer has the best price on the PCV valve, all of 4 or $5. Napa has the best price for the grommet, $2.99 & the old one was petrified, came out in chunks. I did a fresh oil change, unbelievably smooth now & very robust when starting. Nice to have new starter contacts in it. I'm thinking when this set of contacts wears out I'll put in a new or re-furb. starter, they can only last so long & pain in the a$$ to get to.

My Water pump also came with a gasket and also a single bolt that was needed for the updated pump to install properly.

Changing the PCV valve and grommet sounds like a good idea Donco, especially cause I plan on changing out the original plugs soon also.

As for the starter..I replace the whole unit @ around 95,000 mi, It (original) was fine, but I figured I`d better change it before I had any problems with it..I go to some very remote places and the last thing I needed to have issues with it out there !!

I am really trying to reduce the likelyhood of any simple, but critical failures out in the bush because one thing that I have noticed about the 100 is that there are very FEW engine repairs that can EASILY be done on the trail, even with a good set of tools ! :0

Peace !

Sin,

Is it possible to just change the bearings in that pulley? On my last vehicle (Rover), the tensioner pulley bearing seized up. I took the pulley to Napa and they pressed in a new bearing. Is this not possible with the 100's pulleys including the tensioner pulley?

Hi Greg

No.. the bracket is only sold as an assembly, and there is no aftermarket part # availabe for the just the bearing. :frown:

It looks similar in design to the infamous Idler bracket on the 3.0 Toyota truck motors..The good thing is that its not almost 600 bucks like the 3.0 !!

Even if a bearing was available, it looks like it would be very "iffy" to replace it the way this thing is put together...Besides I feel much better by replacing the whole enchilada... the same goes with the tensioner, especially because all those V8 idlers, bearings and pulleys have been improved (reflected in part# changes over the past few years) :)

The new fan bracket arrived this morning, and it turns VERY smooth

Thanks Sin! Good info!

 Single bolt!? Mine came with one too, but I left it in the bag. I looked at it a few times but couldn't figure out what to do with it so used all the old bolts. Even examined everything with a mirror to make sure I didn't miss any. Is one of the bosses on the new pump a little thicker? I must have skipped over the fine print.

I hate that mean little part as well!!!

I had the joy of having the threads near the air conditioner comresser turn to dust. So, I had the bolt, in tight quarters, stuck. Would not turn, would not come out, very poor access! Arg. Finally worked it out by alternating tightening, and loosening and trying to get lube on the thread (uphill). Ended up helicoiling the threads

The bearing in mine was not as smooth as I would have liked either. Probably should have replaced the part, but I wanted to get it all back together that weekend.

Might be an interesting DIY to replace that bearing... Does it look like the bearing can be pressed out?

If it can, I dont know how ! The way it is put together, it looks to be unservicable

The replacement part, however, is yet another updated and improved item by Toyota, So I am glad I changed it out anyway .
:D

I must have missed the location for this bolt as well. Where was it supposed to go?

I thought the bolt was there to potentially replace the stud with the nut. The stud with the torx on the tip in the lower right.
