Changed from drums to front disc on my 74 FJ40. The knuckles are from a 77 FJ40. After putting it all together it's about a half inch shy of getting the last clip on to hold the hubs. The birfs measure 7" from the base to the end. do I need longer birfs?

Sounds like you have the '79 - 89 era shorter Birfields. You can use these with the '77 hubs/knuckles by using a fender washer and bolt to retain the end of the Birf in the lock-out hub instead of the OE snap rig.

, the reason i asked was years ago i did the same swap, Got a donor with everything that i thought i needed in the end found out my course splines were too short. oh well story of my life
, new axles sourced on line solved the problem...Good luck Neil
