Howdy! I have seen comments about using AirTags in your rig for tracking purposes. This is a solid idea. I like to use the strong magnetic AirTag holders available on Etsy here for $5.25/each (seller: KirkMakesThings). Pic attached.

To get super stealthy, watch the YouTube video on how to remove the AirTag speaker. Once you do this, the AirTag will no longer play sounds to alert unknowing thieves from locating the AirTag. You can still track the tag, but now it wont' disclose where you placed it in the vehicle.

I have use those 3D printed cases, they are fine and files are on Thingiverse if you want to print yourself.

However. these Elevation Lab TagVault ones have an extremely powerful magnet and for sure will stay on under the vehicle.

Also note, they still make a noise doing that mod. Just very very faint. You need to cut the copper coil to make them fully silent.

One idea is to have two Airtags. One easily found stock AirTag and another modified hidden AirTag. The thief may be alerted there is an AirTag and find the easy one and then hopefully think the subsequent alerts are left over from the first tag.

Good to have options. The ones I use have super strong magnets and they have never moved or fallen off. Regarding the modification to the AirTag, I have zero sound but yes, clipping the copper coil is easy.

I like the idea of leaving an easy to find AirTag as a decoy.

I may be wrong, but I believe the new iOS update allows users to stop an AirTag that's traveling with them from being tracked?

Hmm wouldn't surprise me if they added that feature. I wonder if it would still be tracked by other phones that pass by. In the end thats the way it normally gets its location updated. Person walking their dog and picks up various tags on the walk. If not, seems like a way for people on buses and public transit to brick others AirTags.

The big thing is the alert that a tag is traveling with you. Pops up with both iOs and Android devices that lets the person know there is an AirTag and to start looking for it.

You are correct! Varies by AirTag model. It notifies the non-owner they are being tracked. If the AirTag is modified without the speaker, then no tone will play. Perhaps this forces the thief to abandon the vehicle much sooner when they realize it's being tracked....? Thanks for pointing out the iOS update.

Just as a heads up - you need to also split the copper coil, in addition to removing the speaker. Even with the speaker removed, it makes an audible tone - markedly less but still audible if you are in a secluded area and it is quiet...

Once the coil is spliced/cut, it is completely quiet.
