As a part of my scouting out a new home neighborhood in or near Tucson, I'm planning a week there at spring break. I'm looking for suggestion on 3 or 4 representative areas of scenic beauty and good wheelin' near Tucson for quick day visits. I will likely choose one of them to camp in for the week.

When is spring break? It has been very dry here this winter, so anywhere you camp may have fire restrictions. If you are thinking hotels, there is a Raddison suites at Speedway/Wilmot, which BTW is about 2-3 miles from my casa. If you want to call me I can whip open the phone book to get you some #'s for places. I will be around this evening and all weekend working in the garage. I put my daughter to bed around 8pm so I won't answer then. 52 zero-2 zero 7- 22 niner 4.

Michael,
Is this for wheeling, neighborhood finding or both? What kind of wheeling? Is your family going to be with you? Alvin and I have been thinking about an all day run going down the backside of the the Catalinas to Oracle, over to San Manuel, down the Cascabel Road and back to Tucson over Reddington Pass. Lots of miles, no challenge, but a chance to see all the different biomes in the area from Sonoran Desert to almost blue spruce alpine.

The Spring Breaks are the week beginnings April 10 for my kids and April 3 for my wife. There is no intention to look for accommodation at this time as I am fixed here in California desert until June or July. This trip will be a get to know both residential neighbourhoods and local natural beauty.

As much as I love wheelin' my prime object when on the trail is just to be where it is quiet and beautiful, away from the masses, so I'll be looking for peace and beauty in the hills and I hope to camp out in some of these places while I'm there and so it will be part a holiday too. GeoRoss's trip looks to me to be just the ticket. When are you doing that? It is possible I could come out before Spring break just for a long weekend. My wife is off school Fridays and Mondays and I can get to Tucson in five hours so that is easy.

I appreciate the help I'm getting here - you guys seem cool - and when I come I certainly hope to meet up with some of you.

We can do that trip anytime. Ross and I have been talkin about doing it when we can get both our wives and the kids together all at the same time (actually a difficult thing to do). Ross, I was thinkin it would be more interesting to do that run the other way, thru Reddington then around and up the back of Lemmon. Then by the time hunger sets in we would be at least heading up the mtn for a nice place to stop.
The Santa Catalina mtn's (Mt. Lemmon) are a very popular place with Tucsonans. You can still get a bit of solitude but you have to hike for it. You can get more solitude in the Santa Rita mtns which are just south of Tucson. There are some nice spots to camp in Madera or Gardner canyons down there. Not much more than an hour from Tucson.

I ploted this run on the map. It looks like a grand day out. I will try to get over Tucson way in about 3 weekends time. I'll post back when I can make it.

My schedule is pretty unpredictable at the moment. I only know for sure that I will be in town on 3/11 and every thrusday. Every day other than those through April is a big black box for me. If I am around I would love to go. Have a good trip.
