Hey guys, im currently looking to purchase a BJ73 here in Aussieland. I'm not a huge car person(although since helping a mate work on the miss'es HJ75 i've been getting better) so i'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to purchasing a 20+ year old 4x4.

I guess i'll just throw all the questions out there.

1. I currently drive a '92 2x4 Hilux(3L) and it gets awesome mileage(roughly 10L/100+KM or 28.3+MPG). I was wondering what sort of mileage i can expect from a BJ73 thats pretty much stock.

2. Is the 3B powerful enough? Also in comparison to my 3L with the extra weight of a cruiser? I plan to do a fair bit of wheeling but i also do a lot of road driving, mostly @ 60-80kmh.

3. The one i'm looking at is said to have done 278K km's, is there anything i should be weary of? or if it has been well looked after like my 3L will it be a very happy little engine.

4. Turbo's. At some point in the future i'd probably like to put a turbo on it to help improve fuel efficiency and give it a little more power. For someone with only a little mechanical experience is it worth attempting to source a 13B-T manifold and using a CT26 off another Toyota or should i leave it to the experts and pay the extra cash.

Cheers lads, you have kept me occupied with reading far to much recently.
Dylan.

Hi Dylan,
Welcome to mud!

The 3B is a hardy engine. 278k if maintained will still be a good engine.

The 13b-t manifold works. I did that on my 3b.

Searching on here and in the diesel section brings lots of good info. Turbo's are talked about in the diesel section all the time.

My3b in a heavy 60 with no turbo used to give me 10.5 Litres per 100k on average. Highway.

Cheers, BB

Thanks for the welcome BB, i've been around reading for the last few months while keeping a local eye out for a truck. Hopefully i've now found one. =D

If you can find it, get a BJ74.
I would like to as that saves me any hastle with sticking a turbo on it in the future, however as i would rather not import into Australia, its very hard to find one that suits me. A lot of the older cruisers, expecially the shorties and middies, in aus have either been thrashed to an inch of their lives or just have too many k's on them for me with no mechanical experience. I need something that i can use for a good DD(good also being that it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg in repairs) as well as take bush.

my bj73 with turbo gets about 10-12l/100km, and thats with injectors that probably need servicing. however my speedo reeds 5ks slower than it should so that would probably affect that reading(can't be bothered to do the math). the power isn't too bad for an old truck, but theres plenty of torque. keeps up with traffic in town but i cruise at about 85-90km/h
