I have a 1979 FJ40. (thought it was a 1980, but Cdan clarified this A.M. it is a 1979)

I don't have PS but I found a complete PS setup from a 1984 FJ60. Is this potential swap compatible? And if so is the harmnic balancer required to make it work on my 2F? His price $300 without hb or $400 with h/b

The same truck has rear axles and we confirmed today my truck has worn rear axles. Are they the same axles from 1979 to 1984? His price $150 for the pair.

thanks

Nope - the closest match is from a '79-'84 Toyota 4x4 mini truck ... you can actually swap the internals into a stock PS box (since the whole thing is discontinued) or buy a pedestal for this conversion. FJ60 stuff will work - but will require fabrication -

You can buy the 3rd (preferably from the front), but the whole axle is wider in a 60. What is worn in your axle - the 3rd or the axle shafts?

the axle shafts are worn. That is good news on the mini PS, as I have a complete mini setup in the shop gathering dust.

thanks

Aaron

The mini-truck axle shafts will also work in the rear, IIRC.

Actually, plenty of folks swap in stronger aftermarket axles, so you may be able to scrounge a pair with a posting over in the WTB forum.

Most of this information is available with the search function in this forum, for future reference.

prices

It was brought to my attention that my previous post made mention of prices. These parts were from a junkyard here in my town not CDAN or American Toyota. My conversation with CDan this morning was for a parts order on other items for the same truck. He wasn't the guy selling the PS setup or the axle shafts etc.

Thanks C.K. for the reminder.

I would only take the PS pump and lines from the fj60 which will bolt up on a 79fj40 then get a mini truck box. Or ask him for the mini box instead of an fj60 box...

Nope, Very different axles..

Mini is not C clip and the pumpkin is centered. The short side FJ60 shaft is the same as the 40 shaft.

The Ps pump from the 60 will more likely not bolt to your engine. Course, it depends on what year you have. It might be drilled and tapped or it might not..

Finding a stock PS box for a will be a headache.

Mounting the 60 box is really not that hard..

The harmonic balancer may be needed if you cannot remove all of the smog equipment. By removing the smog stuff you can make it work. If not, you will need the third V groove for the belt..

Since you have the 79, you could use the PS pump and braket off an fj60, bolts up just fine. You will also need the harmonic balance if you go this route. I bought the harmonic balance for 25.oo bucks....I got lucky....but I'm sure if you look around or wait long enough you can get it at a good price.

The 79 came with a ps option and fj60 ps bracket should work if the 79 has the original engine.

Yes it should, but my 79 was not drilled and tapped.

It is a good idea to make sure that he has the option available to him before he goes out and spends money on something that he does not need.

I agree if its not the original engine. My"May 79" had it so I went this route and used fj40 ps gear box casing and 4x4 ps gearbox as a donor so I could have the factory set up.

Mine was an original motor dec 78 build did not have the holes drilled.

Or a pbrake on the floor (although there was a hole for it and the tank was mounted under the floor, not the PS seat)

If the block is drilled it is simple.

No wonder, yours is the tailend of the assy line. Hopefully riddler's indeed a 79, personally it's looks cleaner.

yeah but the tail end is supposed to be sept if you trust the lit.

According to all of the info I should have had the holes in my block but I did not.

It is just not possible to absolutely trust the build date when making assumptions about what you have.

PS issues

There are not holes in the side for the factory mounting bracket. That basically means added expense of drilling and tapping my fresh rebuild or going mini PS if I really need PS right?

I do have a complete mini setup (minus the Dory? bracket) or JTO bracket.

I need the exercise of manual steering but my wife would sure like PS.

thanks

If I remember correctly someone sells a prefad braket for the ps pump but can not remeber who.

That be Lance @ Iron Pig Off Road:

$35

This bracket accepts mini-truck PS pump, not 60 series pump.

If you do not require emissions air pump, this will work.

If you do require air-pump, stay tuned, as I am mounting a 60 series pump to my '78 2F...

Mini PS here we go

You guys will know what I need. I thought I would just post a photo. I am running smog stuff as it came from the factory. That must mean the air pump is working right?

Here is photo of what I have.

Will this work
