hi there -

been trying to troubleshoot this ac issue but now resorting to posting here for any additional wisdom I couldn't already find on the forum.

Situation: AC doesn't blow cold, just blows normal air - not warm just...air

What I've done:
  1. Confirm the clutch on the compressor is engaged when the AC is tuned on
  2. Replaced the fuse for the AC, though it wasn't bad in the first place. Did the same for the heater since I was there. That was also fine
  3. I used one of the gauges attached to a refrigerant can just to get a ballpark idea of the pressure and it was "yellow" or okay
  4. I pushed the lil valve on both H and L and confirmed a lil something came out
  5. While the AC was on, touched the metal part of the L pipe and it didn't feel 'cold' to the touch. Just normal temp from metal sitting in my garage.
  6. Last year I took it too a shop to get the refrigerant topped off and it blew cold up until about a month ago when I was using it during a hot spell here.
Open to any thoughts - thanks in advance!

Don't waste money on those retrofit kits IMHO. Bring it to a pro and have them pull a vacuum on it and check for leaks. They can do a dye test too if necessary. You can get seals for all the pipes and the cover of the compressor, depending on what you need but first you need to confirm if it's losing pressure. I found a local guy on marketplace who was really good and reasonably priced. I'm sure to can find one local to you if you don't want to pay premium at a shop... Depending on how comfortable you are in fixing it.

UPDATE: Took the truck into a mechanic to get an educated opinion

So the clutch is failing. The mechanic said the rubber is too lose to grab it. When the AC is turned on, the outside part spins (i mistook this for the clutch) and the middle part doesn't.

His rec is to get a new clutch or compressor. GL to me finding one.....

You should be able to find the clutch parts you need for this through Partsouq or Megazip. Failing that, I know you can still get the entire compressor new if you choose to go that route.

Maybe. What vehicle? What market? What planet? What universe?
Haha I've got a KZJ78W.

My initially search off toyodiy part numbers werent that great: ToyoDIY.com - https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_199403_TOYOTA_LAND%20CRUISER_KZJ78W-PGT_8719.4.html?hl=88320

But I'll admit I only just came back from the shop and haven't spent too much time looking yet for viable parts and availability.

Looks like megazip has something: MegaZip Search: 88320-60500 | Online Store - https://www.megazip.net/search?q=88320-60500%09. Well the replacement is out of stock but this other number is avail:

88320-35H92

Not sure if that'll work.. But again, haven't spent much time looking into yet.

That PN is only available out of Japan.

Contact David Stedman @Japan4X4

It does not come with a new clutch. New compressor only.

And it’s not cheap **at all**.

So did your mechanic determine it wasn’t a control side problem? How about checking for / or jumping power to the clutch magnet connector to verify it’s kaput?

So... how screwed am I? I was hasty and maybe too tired when I did this job and ended up ripping part of the compressor off as I was removing the pulley with a tool :dead:

Pic's below.... Pretty confident I just made a $1k+ mistake, yay. As it is now, Im not confident the second snap ring will do anything now that the lip has be ripped off. Considering JB welding it on just to put the pulley on and have something in place so I can put the belt back on to drive the car.

I've already got an inquiry out to japan4x4 to hunt down a new compressor. The original piece is hard to source (fingers cross for Japan4x4), but it looks like 88320-35H92 is comparable replacement. Anyhow, wanted to share my mistake, get opinions and recommend people have their coffee before taking on any job even if its supposed to be simple...

@OGBeno do you use the same clutch parts on this 35H92 as what was needed for the original compressor?

Got the compressor from David and when i put the clutch on with 3 shims, it rubs a decent amount and doesn’t really free spin. This is after i screw the bolt in. Outside of the compressor, im using the same clutch and ring parts listed in the diagram above. I tried to find the 35h92 on a diagram but no luck.

Appreciate the help!
