My brother and I sat down on the folded down tailgate on my '99 Cruiser yesterday and the tailgate cable on the passenger side snapped. After I removed the rubber sheath the reason for the snap was rather evident. It seems that water had gotten inside the sheath and had rusted the cable away and when my brother and I sat down it no longer had the strength to hold the weight.
I haven't had time to take another look to see how best to replace my broken cable. Does the whole apparatus need replacement, brackets and all, or can another cable be reinserted and reinstalled? Also, what tool is needed to remove those brackets?
