I kinda knew you'd say that. It makes sense too.

I've just heard iffy things about 32s with 4.10s on these rigs, like a noticeable loss of power.

Interesting, I am thinking of going to 265/75's myself.

I've read a lot of people say it's "doable" but definitely not good... loss of power, lower MPG due to lugging the engine, piss poor towing. And the 3.4 isn't a torquey engine (compared to, say, a 4.0 XJ engine) so the loss of low end gearing will hurt IMO.

I'm still going to look into swapping to 4.30s if it's cheap enough.

Try 255s with stock gearing! It's actually fine, plenty of power, but go to 4.88s and life is all better. The loss with 265/75s was negligible, and if you do any real wheeling, you will have to modify the pinch weld. Here's the real problem, once you go to 4.30s you'll wish you had 4.88s, after that, you'll wish you had 5.29s (or a SC'r), then you'll want to tub for 35's... I digress.

Thanks for the advice, I was planning on chopping/bending the pinch weld if necessary. I definitely don't plan on going to 35s on this, 32s or 33s at the most. I'd like to build something on 38s eventually... but this 4runner definitely won't be it.

I am torn now. This is my DD and it will see mostly highway miles but tires are limited in the 265/70 size, pretty much everyone makes a 265/75. I will be following along to see how the 4.30 hunt goes.

Depending on how the order of things go, I may end up picking up my tires first so I'll see how bad it actually is. I'd definitely prefer a slightly lower geared rig than I have now but we'll see how things go.

Does your 4runner also have 4.10s? (non e-locked auto V6 almost always = 4.10s)

Nice build so far. We are running 255/85/16 km2s and I did not need to trim much pinch weld was not touched. Only trimming was on limited flares on front bumper when it was stock. With the ARB I have no issues. At full stuff I had a little rubbage in the rear but with new rear bumper it is almost 0. If I would take the grinder to a small portion it would be gone. This is without any bumpstop mods. Click on my sig for my build thread.

255s and 4.30 is bearable but if I find a set of 4.88 for a good price I will swap out. Been running my setup for ~15-20k miles and its been fine. We do not do much towing and rolling hills a majority of the time. But we did go through Rockies, Northern Cascades and Appalachian Mts this summer and it did great.

Thanks! Your build looks pretty close to what I'd eventually like. What kind of mileage hit did you take with the swap to 255s on 4.30s?

Not a lot to add right now, just some little things... the vinyl steering wheel cover was bugging me so I ditched it for a sew-up leather one. 3 HOURS LATER... my hands are sore from sewing but the wheel feels a lot better.

And I have been feeling a light clunk in the front end lately while reversing and turning, so I checked the lower ball joints to find a wobbly driver's side joint. I'll swap those out next week.

I also have some Coverking seat covers on the way. We ordered some for my wife's car so I figured I'd order some for the 4runner as well. I pulled the rear lower seats out of the runner a bit ago for more room behind the seats as I always kept them folded down anyway... so I got front covers only.

Lastly, I'm trying to wrap up a deal for a pair of 4.30 diffs with an E-locker. That'll be a fun project.

So there's a $100 rebate, along with Discount tire's price match policy, that is really tempting me to drop a decent chunk of change this week on some 265/75r16 Duratracs. It's the only tire I can find in that size, C or D rated, with the severe weather snowflake. And I like the way they look too. :grinpimp:

So I may be rocking these on 4.10s for a month or so until I can get the diffs swapped. We'll see how it goes.

So... Did you get them?

Not yet, if I make it happen it will be tomorrow. I'm also considering just buying the tires now and not mounting them, then doing my suspension work/ball joints. I'll need to align it then, and I have questionable alignment currently so I don't want to mess up the new tires.

Or something like that. Who knows. I'll need to drive to Bend in a couple weeks anyway, the new tires would be nice but crossing the 26 pass with 4.10s and the new tires might be interesting.

Picture... thousand words... blah blah

I'll do the ball joints tomorrow, then get the spacers in and align it next weekend-ish or soon after. Not sure if I'll do the diffs before or after, but I'll figure it out. Then I can mount these up!

We ran 275/70/16's on our 00 4Runner sport about 8 years ago. I used to get smoking deals on tires through work and the particular tire I wanted didn't come in 265/70/16. We ran them for 2 years and I never noticed any appreciable difference in power or mileage and they were about an inch taller than stock IIRC.

Are they mounted yet?

No. :flipoff2:

Good to know!

275/70r16 is an odd size... what were you running?

I was running Pirelli Scorpion a/t's. They didn't come in the right size so I got the 275's. Before that rig I had a V6 5speed Tacoma with a 4" lift and 33x12.50's with 4.10's. There was a bit of a power loss going that big but it was far from underpowered.

Nut sure about the weight difference, but I haven't noticed any significant loss of power with my 265/75s. Course I only had a couple weeks of stock tires. When you going to have them mounted?

Well I'm wrapping up the ball joints today, then I plan to work on the sliders and spacers next weekend. Then I can finally get it aligned.... THEN I can mount the new rubber. So hopefully in a week or so.

Throw the spacers on today while you've got it tore down for the ball joints. 1 in the hand or 2 in the bush...or something.
